Make the most of seasonal crops. April and May are prime months for fresh vegetables, with farmers harvesting crops and our own backyards brimming with goodies. "At this point, you observe that local in-season fruits such as mango, guyabano, coconut, rambutan, santol, pomelo, and pineapple are now more easily accessible at your local grocery store or market. Dr. Lorenzo says, "This can assist give more color and variety to your plates, helping you to obtain as many nutrients as possible." "It's also important to stay hydrated by eating more vegetables with high water content, such as lettuce, tomato, and broccoli, and add spinach and eggplant to your diet."

Teaching Kids about Financial Literacy

According to research, many financial habits are formed by the age of seven. If good habits are not introduced to them or established early, it will be more challenging to guide our children in the proper direction. Based on my own experience growing up, it was difficult for me to adjust to 'adulting,' simply because I had poor money management back then. I used to see myself shopping online too often and would use such kind of life because I used to reason that it was a form of stress therapy. It took a while for me to set the records straight and learn how to save for the 'rainy days.'

But as parents, we need to start educating our children about money matters in order for them to avoid the same mistakes we've had. I don't want my nephew and nieces to find themselves one-day missing rent payments or running up too much credit card debt because they were too careless. So, here I've made some tips to help guide the kids about financial literacy the fun and easy way:

Make them work for their money.

Children will learn to utilize money more responsibly if they have to work for it. Many parents give their kids an allowance each week to pay for chores. Giving a child an allowance can also aid with budgeting lessons.

Allow part-time gigs

I allow my nephew Kyle to attend his band's gigs. He is currently the lead guitarist for the upcoming artist, Mizael. Provided that he will not neglect his studies. His studies should always be a priority. No ifs and buts about it. Aside from that being his passion, sometimes he would get singing gigs and he'd be paid for it. So it could be as simple as mowing the lawn of a neighbor or walking someone's dogs to the park--as long as they'd be able to earn money out of their own hard work, it's a good start.

Contribute to Purchases

If my nephew Kyle wanted to get something, I always see that he pays a portion of it. Every parent has probably experienced the pressure of constantly fielding requests for different video games or gadgets. Particularly younger children need to understand that you can only spend a certain amount on discretionary items purchased each month. Children will gain a better understanding of what goods cost if they are encouraged to pay half the price for a brand-new Lego set or a Barbie Doll accessory.

Encourage them to play online games that teach them the value of money

There are lots of free online money games for children that somehow give them at least a gist or understanding of how to be responsible with money. One website I've tried with Kyle is called mortgagecalculator.org/money-games. The site itself has a plethora of game choices and for sure, there'll be something you'd be interested in or at least catch your fancy. From simulation games to role-playing, adventure games among many others. Each game has its own characteristics or underlying objectives. And with different game categories and genres, they can also be classified according to the players' age.

Do you like to solve puzzles or micro-manage resources? Real-time strategy or role-playing games might be better suited for you. But no matter what your interest is, there is definitely a game genre that will appeal to your taste from the said website.

3 health concerns that affect Filipinas today

Being a woman comes with its own set of health issues. The truth is that your biological makeup has an effect on your overall health and raises your chance of certain disorders such as breast cancer and reproductive health problems.

"It is critical for women to be aware of the conditions that commonly affect them so that they may comprehend and take the necessary precautions to prevent its occurrence and seek medical consultation. If they are sick, they should see the right doctor," says Martin P. Manahan, MD, of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed), is the top hospital in the Philippines.

GERD is a condition resulting from a recurrent backflow of gastric contents into the esophagus and adjacent structures causing troublesome symptoms and/or injury to the esophageal lining. It affects both men and women - but women experience its symptoms more frequently. Common symptoms more prominent in women include heartburn, regurgitation, or some of the extra-esophageal symptoms like cough and chest pain. Should one experience severe or frequent GERD symptoms, she should make an appointment with a gastroenterologist.

A call for Cultural Center of the Philippines' Rehabilitation

CCP Main Grounds

Having limited government budget to cover the major repairs, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is actively seeking ways to raise funds for the rehabilitation of the Tanghalang Pambansa (CCP Main Building).

The CCP management organized a gala fund-raiser event, with an unforgettable night of cocktails, chamber music, and opera, featuring world-renowned Filipino tenor Arthur Espiritu, soprano Stefanie Quintin, and the PPO Chamber Ensemble, held on March 14 at The Manila Polo Club in Makati City.

“There is much to be done. We still need to upgrade our sounds and the acoustic system of our theaters. Our limited budget doesn’t include the refurbishment of the interiors. Our dressing rooms need to be revamped. We are also planning to convert some offices into public spaces. To make our vision of a globally competitive, sustainable, and future-ready CCP, we need funds. So, we appeal to everyone to be part of this worthwhile endeavor,” said CCP president Margie Moran-Floirendo.

The initial fund-raising effort kick-started during the Bulawan: The CCP 50th Anniversary Gala in 2019, with the BDO Unibank Inc. underwriting the gala concert and donating the first Php 1 million.

For the first phase of the private sector fund-raising campaign for 2023, the CCP rolls out various packages that government institutions, non-government organizations, business companies, and generous individuals can avail to be part of this worthwhile cause.

Launched during the fund-raiser event at The Manila Polo Club, there are two types of sponsorship packages that generous organizations and individuals can avail: the Institutional Sponsorship

Package 2023 and the CCP Anniversary Gala Sponsorship Package 2023. Under Institutional Package, there are four cash sponsorship categories – Platinum (priced at Php 10 million), Gold (priced at Php 8million), Silver (priced at Php 5 million, and Bronze (priced at Php 2million).

Each package category has corresponding inclusions and perks of partnerships. For sponsorship packages, contact Gemma Marco at gemma.marco@culturalcenter.gov.ph or Vince Oliquiano at vincentpaul.oliquiano@culturalcenter.gov.ph.

“To reach our target, the management is looking at auctioning off the naming rights of our theaters and other venues. We have done this before with our Tanghalang Manuel Conde, which was named after the Dream Broadcasting Company. We are intensively appraising how to maximize this strategy,” said Moran-Floirendo.

But why should organizations and individuals support the CCP and its rehabilitation? “Over half a century since the curtain of the Main Theater rose with Gintong Salakot: Isang Dularawan, the CCP has enriched the lives of generations of Filipinos with virtuosos of our land and of the world. The CCP has brought in our midst the most renowned musicians and performers, discovered and burnished the talent of our most promising artists, and brought them up with pride to the world’s recognitions. Truly, the CCP has offered a glimpse of the soul of the Filipino people,” said CCP chairman Dr. Jaime C. Laya.

As the premiere art institution of the country, the Center strengthens the country's cultural branding and helps in national development by bringing diverse and accessible cultural experiences to the public in the Philippines and beyond.

“With this in mind, we are trying to do our part to address the calls of the modern time and keep our Main Building running for the next 50 more years,” enthused Moran-Floirendo. Averaging 900 shows a year pre-pandemic, the CCP is quite adamant to help deepen the Filipino identity and tell the social realities through thought-provoking and heart-warming stories within and beyond the Philippines shores that transcend on and off the stage.

The rehabilitation will last for three years. As an architectural icon, the management ensures to remain true to the design of National Artist Leandro Locsin, with no drastic changes to the architecture. The rehabilitation will address the wear and tear of the building accumulated through the years.

“We hope to complete the rehabilitation by 2025, so we can open our venues again to the public in 2026. When we reopen the CCP Main Building, the public can expect a globally competitive performance venue and tourist destination,” said Moran-Floirendo.

Even though the building is closed, CCP programs and projects continue, with performances, productions and shows happening at the newly-launched Tanghalang Ignacio B. Gimenez (CCP Blackbox Theater) and partner venues such as the Metropolitan Theater, the Samsung Theater, and the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).

For more information, visit the website (www.culturalcenter.gov.ph). Follow the official CCP social media accounts in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok for the latest updates on CCP shows and programs.

Cardinal Santos Medical Center advises regular screening for colon cancer prevention this Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the Philippines, coming in third after cardiovascular and cerebrovascular illnesses. But did you know that colon cancer is the Philippines' second most common cancer?

"We're aware of all these cancers, breast cancer, of course, being the most prevalent, then we have lung cancer, reproductive cancers like cervical, ovarian, and prostate cancer. Unfortunately, colon cancer is more widespread than we realize," according to Cardinal Santos Medical Center's (CSMC) Dr. Kristine Monte is a resident oncologist.

As abnormal cell growths or polyps begin to multiply in the colon lining and rectum, colon cancer begins in the large intestine. Colon cancer, like most cancers, can spread to other regions of the body if left untreated.

"Colon cancer can strike anyone, of any gender or age," Monte stated. "Even if you have no family history of colon cancer, you may be at risk if you are prone to heavy drinking and smoking, eating too much-processed foods and red meat, being overweight or obese, or having Type 2 diabetes."

The Rise of Empowered Lady Bossings: Women's League Improve Your Logistics Opportunities with Lalamove

Irene Rampola

Being a partner driver and a fleet owner has been made seemingly accessible for all by Lalamove, a leading on-demand delivery platform. This Women’s Month, meet the empowered “Lady Bossings” who empower other women in  Lalamove’s partner driver community. With its easy application process and fast approval, one can enjoy the luxury of working at their own pace while experiencing the perks of being a micro-entrepreneur.

Irene Rampola, a former employee of an automotive dealership company, decided to start her
fleet operations business after doing a thorough research and learning about Lalamove’s fleet
management program.

The ability to spend more time with her children is one of the benefits of starting a business for her. Her income from fleet management enabled her to provide for her family and begin the construction of their own home. They are able to do so with the assistance of the partner drivers under her supervision. Together, they are assisting one another in becoming "their own bosses" as micro-entrepreneurs.

After experiencing the numerous benefits of the fleet management program, she encourages other mothers to continue learning and to not be scared to try something new. "I'm not frightened to explore new things that were exclusively meant for males. I once drove my Lalamove truck. As well as get scheduled, so I can experience what it's like to be a partner driver. Lalamove empowers me to show people that gender will not define your success in life; it’s how you see things in life that matter,” Rampola added.

Partner driver twinning and winning in Lalamove

Joy Bell Jalandoni and Jovylyn Kabingue

Joy Bell Jalandoni and Jovylyn Kabingue, identical twins, earned a steady income with Lalamove as full-time motorbike partner drivers. Joy Bell was persuaded to join Lalamove and work as a microentrepreneur as a partner driver by her sister Jovylyn, who used to be an OFW in Qatar.
At the height of the pandemic.

The twins enjoy utilizing the platform since they can choose which orders to accept. And, like Rampola, they appreciate that Lalamove allows them to attend to their other responsibilities as moms to their children while still assisting their families financially. This is significant for Jovylyn, who is a single mom of an 11-year-old child.

Being a female partner driver has its benefits, but it also has its drawbacks. Joy Bell says she's lost count of the number of times she's faced discrimination for doing a job that most males are expected to do. Yet, with her chin up, she boldly informs skeptics, "Not all of them." Women should be confined to their homes. What matters is that you are able to assist your family and your husband.

Emirates recycles over 500,000 kg of plastic and glass

By 2023, Emirates will have recycled almost 500,000 kg of plastic.
Glass will be collected onboard for repurposing throughout the period of 2022. 500,000 kg is nearly the same weight as a fully loaded Emirates A380.

Emirates Cabin Crew work hard on every flight that lands in Dubai to quickly separate glass and plastic bottles before transporting them to a recycling factory in Dubai. Colored glass is separated and crushed. This 'cullet,' or recycled glass that is ready to be re-melted, is then delivered to a glass manufacturer. UAE manufacturers should incorporate in their batch mix for new bottles.

Plastic bottles are cleaned, chopped into flakes, melted into pellets, and shipped to manufacturers for use in the production of other plastic items. As a result, every year, Emirates and Emirates Flight Catering divert thousands of kilograms of glass and plastic from garbage.

Environmentally aware Emirates Cabin Crew proposed the glass and plastic recycling project onboard in 2019, as part of monthly webinars and events where they are given a forum to provide feedback and encouraged to submit creative ideas with relevant departments. The concept was favorably received and was put into action within a few weeks.

Emirates has a number of different projects that aim on reusing plastic and using sustainable materials whenever possible.
