Unilever's Pure It: The First Non-Electronic Water Purifying Machine to meet US EPA Standards

For someone who's had typhoid fever as a kid, I am very careful now with the quality of water that I drink. I am certain I do not want any member of my family go through the same hellish experience I had with such disease. I'm glad that Unilever Philippines has launched its newest brand, PureIt, the largest selling brand of in-home water purifiers in the world with Excella, a non-electric water purifier that converts tap and untreated water into proven and tested safe and clean water.

PureIt Excella is the only non-electronic water purifier that meets the microbiological safety norms criteria of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the regulatory body with the most stringent standards for safe drinking water over the world.

The Department of Health reveals that waterborne diseases remain a severe public health concern with about 4,200 deaths and 770,000 cases of illness each year from water borne diseases. This is basically the reason why most Filipino households do not trust tap water for drinking. According to surveys, 50 percent of urban Filipino households prefer to buy expensive drinking water from water refilling stations. "Unilever's mission is to make sustainable living commonplace all over the world, we are launching PureIt to provide Filipino families with access to guaranteed clean and safe drinking water, as certified by both international and local health institutions like the DOH and Philippine Public Health Association," said Brian Duruin, PureIt brand manager.

So what makes PureIt Excella different? It turns potentially dangerous tap water into safe and clean water by purifying it twice, giving users complete germ protection. The first level of purification consists of three layers where water initially passed through the Germkill Processor that disinfects the water of almost all bacteria, viruses and germs. Next, it passes through the Advanced Microfiber Mesh that filters out precipitates such as visible and invisible dust and dirt particles, as well as metallic impurities. And the Carbon Polisher removes pesticides, chlorine, and odor from the water, before it goes to the next level of purification.

The second level purification is done by Micro-charged membrane which further purifies the water by removing remaining parasites or bacteria--assuring families of protection against harmful diseases. The final product is nonetheless clear, fresh and natural tasting water that's free from harmful agents.

PureIt Excella is also a great tabletop device, it saves one from the hassle of buying expensive water from refilling stations and the associated risk of contamination through unclean containers.

Sensodyne Now Comes in Affordable Sachet!

I suffer from dental hydrosensitivity or in a more layman's term and in the vernacular--also "pangingilo". If you think it's that simple, then you better think again. Although "pangingilo" seems like an ordinary thing, the truth is that it can truly affect one's life. There are certain foods or drinks which I can't truly enjoy because of this condition. I am partial to unripe mangoes which I love to eat with bagoong (fermented shrimp). But each time I'd eat my favorite food, I'd experience a short sharp pain especially when I'd try to brush my teeth after eating such. It's a good thing that there's a toothpaste made specifically to help us prevent that "pangingilo" thing--Sensodyne.

According to a study conducted in 2011, 87 percent of Filipinos have dental carries which if not properly addressed could even lead to more serious problems such as gum disease. A lot of Filipinos also do experience dental hydrosensitivity or "pangingilo". And now, the good news is that the company behind Sensodyne made our favorite toothpaste for sensitive teeth even more affordable so that more Filipinos can enjoy their food and prevent and keep dental hypersensitivity away. With the availability of Sensodyne sachet SRP (suggested retail price) of Php10 each, say goodbye to pangingilo because there's no reason why we can ever experience pangingilo or dental hypersensitivity ever again.

During the launch called "Say No to Ngilo", Sensodyne introduced their brand ambassador, celebrity TV host Luis Manzano who himself had shared his personal experience with pangingilo. "I loved to eat ice cream, it's my ultimate favorite. I used to get sharp pains on my teeth a lot because of that until I've switched to using Sensodyne. Now, I can enjoy eating my favorite ice cream more because I no longer had to care about pangingilo," said Luis.

You too can say no to ngilo by regularly using Sensodyne. Sensodyne toothpaste is specifically made for people with sensitive teeth in mind. Sensodyne is available nationwide at your favorite stores and the sachet variants can also be purchased in sari-sari stores (retail stores) within your neighborhood.

Grand, Glittery, and Gold at Marriott Manila

It was a night of all things shining, shimmering, splendid as Marriott Hotel Manila’s associates – aptly called Brilliant Hosts – celebrated their Annual Party last February 10 at the Manila Ballroom. With the theme “Grand, Glittery, and Gold,” the hosts were in their best regalia as the men were dapper in their suits and tuxedos, while the ladies strutted their stuff in their beautiful flowing gowns. All of the hotel’s departments were divided into groups and were tasked to create a video presentation based on an era assigned to them, from the roaring 50’s to the modern 2000’s, whilst still staying true to the night’s theme. The Sales & Marketing and Engineering team defended their title and emerged as the champion for the 2nd straight year with their rock-and-roll inspired 80’s music video, while the F&B Kitchen team won 2nd place with their throwback 90’s entry and the Housekeeping and Laundry team bagged 3rd place with their flashback 50’s short film.

Fritz Andal of the Engineering Department and Joanna Tiglao of the F&B Kitchen Department emerged as the Best Male and Female Performers respectively, while Cholo Martillo and Jane Manzanero, both from the Sales and Marketing Department, won as Male and Female Stars of the Night.

The video presentations as well as the individual winners were chosen by Mr. Ronan Capinding, Mr. Roly Halagao, and Mr. Paul Daza.

Marriott’s philosophy of “putting people first” resonates in the manner that the Brilliant Hosts provide utmost service to their guests by exemplifying the adage of their brand founder Mr. J. W. Marriott, “If you take care of your associates, they will take care of the customer, and the customer will keep coming back.” And for one day each year, the company celebrates in thanksgiving for all the hard work and commitment that its hosts provide to make Marriott Hotel Manila as successful as it is today.

Do you still see kids playing games today like we did during our time? The answer, unfortunately, is no. Technology has had such an immense impact on children's play habits that hardly an of them have heard of the games their parents used to enjoy on the streets. Play is not only fun in itself, but it is an integral part of your child's learning about the world and his role in it. It helps him develop physical, cognitive, emotional and social skills that are important in life.  "Children learn through play," says Maricar Gustilo-De Ocampo, Ph.D., a well known education expert and professor. Playing not only provides good exercise for children, it also helps improve their motor skills. "It stirs creativity; planning active play provides the skills necessary in coordinating and strategizing with a playmate," Dr. Gustillo- De Ocampo explains. "Playing is also a social activity: Children learn to cooperate with one another, make friends, and know what it's like to be part of a team. The lessons that children learn will certainly help them in later years: how to win, how to accept defeat, and how to rise up after you've fallen."

Children are naturally precocious. They have this sense of awe and wonder with pretend-play and role playing--one of the most powerful forms of play. When a child uses her hairbrush as a microphone or when your son runs and crawls around pretending to be Spiderman, your child is exhibiting symbolic play. A child can hold a mental image of another object or situation in his head. Hence, he can pretend to be going through routines like taking a bath without the actual tub or water. Eventually, the play becomes more elaborate, to include role-playing and other imaginary games. Playing allows children to express themselves using their feelings and emotions. A child's intuition is also very important in their world of play. They feel the different characters that they want to know about.

With the vision to further help Filipino children to explore their interests, gifts, and talents through fun role-play, KidZania Manila will be opening its doors in early 2015. It's the first-of-its-kind indoor hyper-real play city. Dr. Gustillo-De Ocampo called KidZania "the dramatic play corner of the 21st century," because it's one of the best places for kids to experience role-play. "Here children are given the opportunity to try out, pretend, and create different roles and characters, so that when they grow to become adults, they will have a better idea about what they want to be when they grow up," she added.

KidZania is an interactive kids' city combining inspiration, fun and learning through realistic role play for children 4-14. Kids independently explore the kid-sized city with over 100 exciting careers to choose and learn from. Each experience is designed to empower kids, giving them the confidence to be their best selves, and inspiration to be great global citizens. One of the world's most inventive, most awarded and fastest growing kid's edutainment concepts---KidZania can be found in 12 countries as well as 13 new sites under development across the globe including in the Philippines. KidZania was founded in Sta.Fe, Mexico City in 1997. KidZania Manila is franchised by Play Innovations, Inc., a subsidiary of ABS-CBN Corporation, and is set to open its doors to Filipino kids in 2015.

KidZania's ingenious approach to learning were even recognized by CNN as KidZania made it to CNN's Top 10 Best Franchisees for Travelers list. "At KidZania Manila, kids rule their own world. They can be anything they want to be. We provide a unique role-playing experience for children, encouraging their natural desire to imagine, explore, and create, to thrive," said Maricel Pangilinan-Arenas, president and CEO of Play Innovations Inc., the local franchise owner of KidZania Manila.

KidZania Manila will be a place where everything a child dreams of becomes real. It's both an experience and an adventure with huge doses of life lessons. It's going to be the biggest dramatic play corner in town where 1,500 children can play with adult facilitators and guides who will help out in the process of learning. KidZania Manila is a firm believer in the seed of learning so it will provide children with multiple opportunities to pretend play, characters, jobs, roles, and lifestyles to try out. Playing will help them understand what it is to be an adult. Kids need to follow certain directions from our play facilitators to give them a pathway of what they wanted to do. The importance of integrated play will be there as well as the awareness of the power of play: physical, cognitive, language, emotional and social. Moms need not worry for all activities are age ranked. KidZania along with partner education specialists has developed everything in conjunction with the activities that complements with K+12 education program.

Set to open in 2015 with a play area of 8,000 square meters inside an Ayala Mall in Bonifacio Global Center, corner 11th Street, KidZania Manila will be set up like a pretend city with its own international airport, promenades, boulevard, theater, and its own KidZania money called KidZoes. In fact, Pangilinan-Arenas has proudly announced that KidZania Manila even has a real plane with an actual flight simulators.

So kids, get ready and brace yourselves to conquer the world as KidZania Manila opens in 2015. With its three special advocacies highlighted at KidZania Manila--the importance of play, power of story and urban greening, kids will surely learn how to contribute in making this world a better place to live in. KidZania isn't just all about make believe. It is much more than that. KidZania is a family edutainment center which gives importance to the right brain (the one not encouraged at a regular school), it challenges children to think of possibilities, also known as imagineering. It is about critical thinking and seeing what they can do in this environment. The best part? Special children are also welcome as the facilities are designed for all children. The fun, experience, camaraderie and learnings once they stepped inside KidZania Manila will be etched in their minds forever.

Nurture Run 2014: Be a Breastfeeding Advocate

We've often been told that breastfeeding is the best for babies, but it's quite surprising to learn that according to recent studies by the Food and Nutrition Reasearch Institute (FNRI-DOST) that 7 out of 10 mothers opt for infant formulas and other artificial milk substitutes. It's so alarming that Iza Abeja, Founder and Executive Director of Beauty, Brains and Breastfeeding (BBB) together with UNICEF would like to encourage mothers to be real and go for exclusive breastfeeding. Thus, to further promote, support and protect the rights of the breastfeeding mother and child, BBB is organizing Nurture Run, one of the country's biggest breastfeeding awareness initiatives to date.

Beauty, Brains and Breastfeeding was established with the aim to bring back the breastfeeding culture in the country and to raise the stature of breastfeeding and debunk misconception that breastfeeding is only those who can't afford formula milk.

Nurture Run 2014 expects more than 10,000 runners and breastfeeding advocates to join the campaign. Proceeds of the Nurture Run will go to mobilizing skilled counselors, sustaining mommy groups and organizing breastfeeding awareness activities as well as supporting Milk Banks through Milk Letting Days. "All these initiatives will be carried out in strategic areas in the country specifically in disaster prone provinces," notes Iza. "As the recent disasters in Tacloban, Bohol and Zamboanga have taught us, breast, ilk can save lives."

The Nurture Run 2014 will be held on April 13, 2014 Sunday from 5:30 am to 10:00am at the Quezon Memorial Circle. Participants have an option either to cover 3km or 5km. Race kits costs Php450.00 inclusive of the race bib and Nurture Run shirt. The event is co-presented by UNICEF, International Labour Organization (ILO), National Nutrition Cluster group for Haiyan/Yolanda and the Department of Health (DOH) in coordination with venue-host the Quezon City Government.

Let's join hands to give Filipino children the most genuine form of care and nutrition through breastfeeding. Help us to raise funds to initiate support in breastfeeding in emergency and to establish more public lactation stations. Save the date and help us to spread the word by joining the Nurture Run 2014!

Cignal Digital TV--Feast of Colours: An Evening of Gastronomic Feast with Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian

Cignal Digital TV, the Philippine's pioneer DTH satellite provider recently made history by bringing one of the greatest culinary icons--the Next Iron Chef Season 4 winner Chef Geoffrey Zakarian to the Philippine shores and whipped up a one-of-a-kind five course meal for the most discriminating foodies. The dinner gala was held at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza dubbed as "Feast of Colours".

Feast of Colours was truly an unforgettable evening as diners were treated to live music performances by Broadway and West End veterans Isay Alvarez and Robert Sena along with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra. Proceeds of the said event went to the Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation (PDRF), the country's first permanent, year round private sector vehicle for disaster management.

The Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation (PDRF) is the country’s primary private sector vehicle for disaster management. After the devastation brought about by typhoons Fengshen (2008), Ketsana, and Parma (both 2009), the Office of the President issued Executive Order No. 838 on October 22, 2009, creating the Special National Public Reconstruction Commission to spearhead, implement and adopt urgent and effective measures to bring about the reconstruction of affected areas in the country and to address the needs of the affected population.
The Public Commission was mandated to tap the resources of the private sector for the reconstruction efforts to address the continuing emergency brought about by the recent calamities. To work with the Public Commission, the leaders of some of the country’s largest private corporations and leading NGOs organized PDRF.
On October 23, 2009, a cooperation agreement was drawn up between the Public Commission and PDRF to tap the resources of the private sector and to enhance and facilitate the cooperation and coordination between the Philippine Government and the private sector in formulating a reconstruction strategy that can be implemented.
During its initial years of operation, PDRF principally focused on activities directed towards rehabilitation of disaster-stricken areas.
Ongoing recovery programs are primarily focused on the hardest-hit areas of the Super Typhoon Haiyan (local name: Yolanda) earthquake in Bohol and Cebu, and the unrest in Zamboanga.
These areas are in Northern Cebu, Northern Negros, Northern Panay, Leyte/Tacloban, Samar, Palawan/Busuanga, Bohol, Zamboanga City.
Disaster management activities are centered on preparedness, relief, recovery and reconstruction.
For more on PDRF, please visit:

During the press preview of the said event, Cignal Digital TV's Chief Operating Officer and Managing Director, Ms, Annie Naval revealed that there have actually been plans on bringing the Next Iron Chef Season 4 in the country last year but it did not materialized because of the devastating disasters that has happened in the country including the typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). They felt the country wasn't ready yet for an exciting event as the Next Iron Chef so they scratched off the plans and flew in its winner Chef Geoffrey Zakarian this year instead with the aim to help more people in need.

Colours is Cignal TV's lifestyle channel with visions of celebrating life and loving life. There's no other way to celebrate life than enjoying good food. It is an integral part in every celebration. Among the many celebrity chefs who appear on Colours' many cooking shows, The Next Iron Chef Season 4 winner Chef Geoffrey Zakarian was their unanimous choice. After all, winning the title of the Next Iron Chef is synonymous to having a crown that gives one bragging rights in the culinary world. After winning the title, Chef Geoffrey Zakarian took in fellow Next Iron Chef winner and fellow celebrity Chef Alex Guarnaschelli as his sous chef on Iron Chef America. Thus, making Zakarian as the only Next Iron Chef winner to mentor another Next Iron Chef winner.

Manila's elite crowd enjoyed a delectation when they came to Feast of Colours and indulged in Chef Geoffrey Zakarian's cuisine, where he put on a cooking demo of all the food that was served. With the fusion of East and West as its theme, the main course was the quintessentially Filipino dish of all, Adobo.

"I really had a good sampling of Filipino food especially Adobo--your food was very eye opening. My two kids were raised in adobo because of our Filipino nanny of six years who'd cook that dish for my family," Chef Geoffrey Zakarian revealed during the press preview. "I also had a lot of Filipinos working for my restaurants and I love to make use of vinegar, garlic, onions, and bay leaf on foods, so Adobo isn't exactly new to me."

During the press preview, we were lucky because we had the chance to taste and sample Chef Geoffrey Zakarian's take on the Filipino dish adobo but with a twist. He incorporated all the flavors in his Adobo Spiced Pork belly--using the most unique ingredients put together in one sumptuous dish: endive, pickled mango and calamansi lime (Philippine Lemon). The result? It's totally fantastic! Chef Zakarian's Adobo Spiced Pork Belly was like a circus in your palate. Its got some sweet, spicy kick, somewhat bitter, you'll taste some sourness and salty at the same time and some umami flavor somewhere too. But surprisingly, the burst of flavors all come together to create that east meets west concept or theme of the Feast of Colours. The pork belly was succulent and fork tender, it almost melts in the mouth. Chef Zakarian says it's simply because it's been cooked for 18 hours and basted to perfection.

"It wasn't a hard decision to come here. I am amazed at the Filipino people. I'd love
to create a restaurant in Manila someday. The people and the culture, the family structure here are enough to make me invest. All these are truly remarkable...for Filipinos."

Zakarian also said that in his two-days stay in the country, he's enjoyed eating Lechon (roasted pig), sigarilyas (winged bean), bangus (milkfish), beef tapa and tocino. But he's partial to ulang (fresh water shrimp/prawn), sigarilyas and star apple.

During the Q and A of the press preview, a member of the media asked what dish does Zakarian think is hardest to cook? "That's quite a difficult question. As a chef, give me ingredients and I'd be able to whip out and make something out of it. Of course, it may not be perfect but good enough at least.  But I'd like to explore Vietnamese and Japanese foods," Zakarian said.

And here's a little trivia: Zakarian often gets asked on what he cooks at home for his family. To which he says, "I cook whatever I feel like. Everyday is different, it all depends on my mood. One more thing, I don't cook at home, only on weekends and for my kids alone."

Chef Geoffrey Zakarian was such a real trouper as he personally signed around 700 pieces of his hardbound coffee table cookbooks. He also agreed to be photographed without any qualms nor complains about it.

Electrolux Design Lab 2014

Imagine this: You had an exhausting day at school and you can’t wait to get home and rest. On your way home, the weather was unpredictable and the pollution in the streets was horrible. As you enter your room, you realize that it is not as spotless as you hoped it was. You come in to the kitchen to find good food, but you find nothing on the dining table. You had a draining day and the last thing you would want to do is take care of the household chores.
As you let out a weary sigh, you realize that your home appliances can take care of all these. You see the MAB cleaner scanning your house and deploying its flying mini-robots to the areas in need of cleaning. Meanwhile, an Atonium 3D Food Printer has determined your nutritional needs and is working on a healthy meal for you. At the same time, the Breathing Wall started to purify the air while recreating an environment that will help you relive a happy memory. Imagine this futuristic scenario made possible by you.

This advanced home is the brainchild of the top three winners at last year’s Electrolux Design Lab competition.
Electrolux Design Lab 2014
This year, Electrolux, a global leader in household appliances, partnered with the University of the Philippines-Diliman, De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, and University of the East-Caloocan to give design students a chance to create a thoughtful, modern home for the rest of the world to enjoy.
Design students around the globe are invited to submit innovative ideas for the future household for a chance to win € 5,000 and a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux Global Design Center.
On its 12th year, Electrolux Design Lab continues to pave the way for future visions of urban household lifestyles, with the theme Creating Healthy Homes. The competition seeks ideas for products, accessories, consumables and services for three focus areas: Culinary Enjoyment, Fabric Care and Air Purification.
