Pap smear is a safe way to screen for cervical cancer,

 

Recommended for women aged 21 and up the pap smear is a proactive and preventive measure against cervical cancer

“I’m really looking forward to my Pap smear today—said no woman ever” is a sentiment shared by legions of females for a good reason. Lying on the table with their feet in stirrups and their legs spread apart so a gynecologist can pry their vagina walls open with a speculum and scrape cell samples from their cervix can be downright awkward, uncomfortable, and embarrassing."

Filipinas, in fact, are so averse to Pap smears that less than 1% of 54 million Pinays have undergone it in 2023, said the Philippine Institute for Development Studies.

Small wonder then why cervical cancer is the second leading type of cancer among women and girls between the ages of 15 and 44 in the Philippines.

“Consider these sobering statistics: Every two hours, a Filipino woman dies from cervical cancer. Every day, cervical cancer takes the lives of 12 women in the Philippines. Every year, 4,380 women succumb to cervical cancer,” says Renee Vina G. Sicam, MD a gynecologist from top hospital in the Philippines, Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed). “This wouldn’t be the case if women get a regular Pap smear, a screening test to detect precancerous or cancerous cells in the cervix.”

You don’t have to like it, adds the MakatiMed health specialist. “You just have to appreciate the importance of the test as a proactive and preventive measure against cancer.” Dr. Sicam sets the record straight on this cringy but vital procedure:

Get a Pap smear. “A Pap test is strongly recommended for those who are 30 years old,” Dr. Sicam explains. “If the test comes out with a normal result, which means no abnormal cells were found, screening can be performed every three years.”

Can Pap smear also detect HPV? Dr. Sicam clarifies that there’s a separate HPV DNA testing that checks for the presence of human papillomavirus, whose strains are linked to cervical cancer. “This test is also recommended to those at least 30 years old. If results come out negative, screening can be done every five years.”

It doesn’t require much preparation. “Before you go to your Pap smear appointment, make sure you don’t have your period,” says Dr. Sicam.

Wear comfortable clothing to your appointment. Your doctor will either have you change to a hospital gown sans underwear or have you strip from the waist down. “Ask a friend or family member to accompany you if you’re feeling anxious about the test,” advises Dr. Sicam.

It’s fast. A Pap smear takes no more than five minutes tops! After that, you’re free to go about your daily activities. “Depending on where you have your Pap smear done, the results can be released after a few days or up to three weeks,” says Dr. Sicam.

Having performed numerous Pap smears before, the MakatiMed Gynecologist has seen how stressed and vulnerable patients get when a relative stranger checks on them "down there." "Honestly, we don't care what you or 'it' looks like," assures Dr. Sicam. "We just want to make sure that you get properly tested to rule out cervical cancer or take steps to help you overcome the disease."

Our handwoven crafts carry the rich story of our culture. Every thread carries the collective memory of our people, shaped by our experience and heritage, passed on through generations to tell the tales of our race. Each piece reflects an identity, connecting the past with the present through colors, patterns, and techniques that showcase a particular legacy.

This May, traditional woven handicrafts will take centerstage at Habi Fiesta!, a three-day celebration of culture organized by the J. Amado Araneta Foundation (JAAF) through the Gateway Gallery. Happening from May 16 to 18 at the Gateway Mall 1 Activity Area, the event highlights indigenous weaving practices and the communities that preserve them.

”Habi Fiesta! is our way of preserving and highlighting the rich and diverse weaving practice all over our archipelago,” Diane Romero, Executive Director of the J. Amado Araneta Foundation. “Through this event, we’re bringing the beauty and cultural importance of these products closer to patrons here at the heart of the metro.”

Now in its second year, Habi Fiesta! returns with a broader selection of weavers and a renewed commitment to honoring Philippine textile heritage. The event gathers weavers, designers, and artisans from select parts of the country.

This year’s roster includes Abel Kan Burda Ta Ka Itnegan (Abra), Namarabar Ethnic Products (Abra), Pinangga Ethnic Hand Embroidery (NCR), Rhea Yang’s Art Shop and Project Payatas PH (from Quezon City), La Herminia Piña Weaving (from Iloilo), Laga Weaving Creations (from Kalinga Province), Abella’s House of Crafts (from Ifugao); Angie’s Yakan (from Zamboanga); Andrea Aswigue (from Isabela), Namarabar Ethic Crafts and Antiques (from Abra), and Malaybalay Choice Handicrafts (from Bukidnon).

Guests can also witness some weaving demonstrations courtesy of the participating weavers. The demo will run all three days of the fair. This will give the guests a more intimate look into the dedication and skill that goes into the weaving process.

Habi Fiesta! aims to support Gateway Gallery’s arts and culture programs and serves as JAAF’s annual flagship initiative in celebration of National Heritage Month. The event also introduces convenient digital payment options, including GCash and Maya, making it easier for guests to support local artisans and bring home pieces that carry meaning and memory.

Celebrating two decades of nurturing emerging and established playwrights, directors, actors, and designers, the Virgin Labfest (VLF) continues to foster its garden of brave narratives with 12 new scripts ripe for the picking. The country’s theater festival of untried, untested, and unstaged one-act plays returns from June 11 to June 29, 2025, at the Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez (CCP Black Box Theater).

NEW SCRIPTS, NEW CONVERSATIONS

Featuring 12 new scripts by 8 virgin male and female playwrights and 4 returning playwrights in its milestone year, VLFXX: HINOG blooms into a passionate community of unheard voices and untold stories, bringing people closer through truthful and compelling storytelling.

A group of friends makes the most of their summer vacation with a mystery game in YOJ’s TBT: TAKBO, BATANG TONDO. Albin, the policeman in their little world, is baffled when the real “suspect” isn’t punished.

Liane Carlo Suelan’s ANG BATA KAG ANG ILAGA is set in St. Jerome’s Home for Children. One of the orphans, Isaac, misses his chance to take a baby rat in when it goes missing.

Religion and sexuality intersect in Elise Santos’ SA BABAENG LAHAT as it centers on the lives of three girls in a Catholic school.

BEHIND THE CURTAINS OF THE VLF STAGE

Apart from celebrating budding and veteran playwrights, VLFXX: HINOG prides itself on planting seeds of wisdom through its educational components: Staged Readings, Theater Talks, Playwrights’ Fair, Dramaturgy Fellowship Exhibit, and Writing Fellowship Program and Showcase.

Staged Readings presents stripped-down reading performances of selected script submissions from VLFXX: HINOG. In this edition, Andy Abellar’s WALA GINAKAMATISAN ANG ITLOG, PATAY NA SI RIZAL by Matt Ordoñez, M.E. Mejaro’s ISANG MALAKING TIPAK NG BATO SA GITNA NG ILOG, and Rex Sandro Nepomuceno’s GANIMIDE take the VLF stage.

The forum series, Theater Talks, highlights the creative and production processes behind performances. Meanwhile, Playwrights’ Fair will host conversations with renowned playwrights, as curated by veteran writer and VLF founder Rody Vera.

Delve into the science of VLFXX: HINOG’s theater-making under the mentorship of Jonas Gabriel Garcia with the Dramaturgy Fellowship Exhibit. The VLF Writing Fellowship Program and Showcase, on the other hand, is the culmination of a two-week mentorship program under the guidance of award-winning playwright Glenn Sevilla Mas. CCP Vice President and Artistic Director Dennis Marasigan will direct. Presenting new tales of diversity and challenging perspectives, VLFXX: HINOG shows are scheduled at 2 p.m. matinee and 8 p.m. gala, while the educational components are at 5 p.m.
