Nurture Run 2014: Be a Breastfeeding Advocate

We've often been told that breastfeeding is the best for babies, but it's quite surprising to learn that according to recent studies by the Food and Nutrition Reasearch Institute (FNRI-DOST) that 7 out of 10 mothers opt for infant formulas and other artificial milk substitutes. It's so alarming that Iza Abeja, Founder and Executive Director of Beauty, Brains and Breastfeeding (BBB) together with UNICEF would like to encourage mothers to be real and go for exclusive breastfeeding. Thus, to further promote, support and protect the rights of the breastfeeding mother and child, BBB is organizing Nurture Run, one of the country's biggest breastfeeding awareness initiatives to date.

Beauty, Brains and Breastfeeding was established with the aim to bring back the breastfeeding culture in the country and to raise the stature of breastfeeding and debunk misconception that breastfeeding is only those who can't afford formula milk.

Nurture Run 2014 expects more than 10,000 runners and breastfeeding advocates to join the campaign. Proceeds of the Nurture Run will go to mobilizing skilled counselors, sustaining mommy groups and organizing breastfeeding awareness activities as well as supporting Milk Banks through Milk Letting Days. "All these initiatives will be carried out in strategic areas in the country specifically in disaster prone provinces," notes Iza. "As the recent disasters in Tacloban, Bohol and Zamboanga have taught us, breast, ilk can save lives."

The Nurture Run 2014 will be held on April 13, 2014 Sunday from 5:30 am to 10:00am at the Quezon Memorial Circle. Participants have an option either to cover 3km or 5km. Race kits costs Php450.00 inclusive of the race bib and Nurture Run shirt. The event is co-presented by UNICEF, International Labour Organization (ILO), National Nutrition Cluster group for Haiyan/Yolanda and the Department of Health (DOH) in coordination with venue-host the Quezon City Government.

Let's join hands to give Filipino children the most genuine form of care and nutrition through breastfeeding. Help us to raise funds to initiate support in breastfeeding in emergency and to establish more public lactation stations. Save the date and help us to spread the word by joining the Nurture Run 2014!
