There will always be a Uratex bed that will match your sleeping needs.

Some people with sleeping problems or insomniacs find it difficult to get their daily Zzzzz. The more we age, the more difficult it is for us to find a good sleeping patterns.Based on a recent research, almost 50 percent of adults have sleeping problems. Popping a sleeping pill doesn't do justice either. These conditions include respiratory disorders, changes in sleep cycles or rhythms, medical and psychiatric illness and increased medicine use. Thus, these conditions may result to sleeping disturbances that would eventually lead to “less quality of life, depression and anxiety, slower reaction time, memory problems, issues with balance and vision increasing risk of falls, and even death."

Which explains why, in this year’s celebration of “World Sleep Day,” an annual event that focuses on the celebration of sleep and a call to action versus important sleep-related issues, WASM chose the theme “Good Sleep, Healthy Aging” in order to elicit attention on common sleep disturbances among older adults. The group said that “getting a good night’s sleep is possible at any age—and it is vitally important for overall health.”

A comfy Uratex bed helps promote good sleep.

Just like the rest of the world, many Filipinos also suffer from sleep problems. Here in the Philippines, Uratex, the brand known for making quality foams and mattresses, continues on its advocacy in helping Filipinos get that good sleep by coming up with superior bed products. And in relation to the celebration of World Sleep Day 2013, Uratex will support a major sleep symposium mounted by the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine happening in the country. Prior to the event, the two sleep medicine specialists—Dr.Teofilo Lee-Chiong Jr., M.D. and Dr. Deborah Bernardo—were introduced by Uratex to the media today via a press briefing. Dr.Teofilo Lee-Chiong Jr., M.D., is a Professor of Medicine at the National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado, USA and has authored or edited several books on sleep medicine and pulmonary medicine. He is the Chief Medical Liaison at Philips Respironics and is a member of various sleep associations in the United States. He graduated from the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center.

Dr. Deborah Bernardo, on the other hand, is also a graduate of the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center, and a Fellow of the Philippine College of Physicians, Philippine Neurological Association and the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine. She trained in sleep medicine at the National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado and is now the Head of the Comprehensive Sleep Disorders Center and Chief of the Neurology Section of St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City.

Together, the two sleep experts will talk about how Filipinos can get their good night sleep plus other ways in order to achieve good sleep regardless of their age and benefit from it in order to live healthy lives.

When we were kids, we were made to wear whatever it is that our parents like. We were still kids back then, naive and still kind of innocent and a little baby-ish as we cling on to our 'rents and try our best to please them. I should know, I've always hated wearing super itchy gartered tube as a kid, but to make my Mommy happy, I had no other choice but to grin and bear wearing them. Argh! Those were the old days. I really am grateful I had grown to become "okay."

I had to learn how to express my personality by means of trial and error. There were those awkward "baduy" moments of my life when I had to wear the braces that cost my Mom a fortune in those expensive wires and maintenance. I was born in the '80s and I remember in those days, people wore their hair high on a bun with tons of spraynets and maximized gel or mousse usage just to get that perfect 'do or tresses that they wanted.

I discovered more about myself later on in life. We weren't exactly rich so I had to get by with whatever I have and to be honest, that wasn't really much. Hence, creativity is the key to make things easy. I had to think out of the box most of the time. I discovered my passion for writing. You see, as an artist and writer, being "quirky" is almost synonymous.  I could manage to wear braids as many as the teenage Jolina Magdangal and could not care less. I also wore hats (from baseball caps to fisherman's hat and end up with an elite or A-lister's such as the ones worn by Rose Dewitt Brukater in the 1997 film Titanic (played by Kate Winslet).

But my personal mantra goes, that for as long as I've my watch on  (I don't need to be fashionable enough) and I'm fully comfortable with whatever it is that I wear, I'm okay. There goes my long love time love affair with shoes. I love rubbershoes and sneakers. My Adidas running shoes and I had been together for more than a decade now. I like how comfy and light it is. If there's one thing that's abused among my body part, it has to be my feet.

My personality speaks for itself. I wear clothes i am most comfortable with, regardless if it's quite tattered, as long as it's clean and comfy--I'll still wear it. But of course, there are times when you had to look your best for certain events, then that's where you had to dress to impress. But for ordinary days, a shirt and jeans plus a pair of comfy Adidas will do just fine. I am a very simple person, no fringe, no hang-ups. Just pure fair and square, with simple needs and simple joys.

I am sporty, free spirited lass who doesn't long for much attention. I prefer avant garde. You must wear your clothes and stuff and not let your clothes wear you. And for as long as you speak the truth, converse with manners and strike intellectual conversations, you'll never go wrong.

I'd rather be myself living my own style sans being too fashionably flashy or  trying to please anybody or make up a mask just so I could fit in. I'm way too past that now at my age. Even way back in high school, I never tried to be someone else just to fit in. It's just not my cup of tea. I'd rather be someone who's different, someone who could stand up from the crowd and say that, "Hey, it's me! If you can't seem to accept that, sorry. But it's not gonna be my lost, but yours. You're losing that opportunity to get to know a good friend in me.

Like Miley Cyrus in her latest film, So Undercover, I'd like to see myself into learning more about life and becoming open to more changes. One thing's sure, I'm still going to live my style the way I want it!

As parents, we all want the best for our children. We would like our kids to be able to reach their full potentials so as much as we can, we try to let them explore and hone their talents and interest in different activities such as ballet, arts and crafts, sports and even culinary. As if those aren’t enough, some even enroll their kids in loads of after-school activities. However, what most parents don’t seem to realize are the stress all these stuff are giving our kids. Not everyone can handle multi-tasking, or the capability of doing different things at the same time. It can really be stressful, especially for someone at his or her tender age.

Ms. Marilyn Teo explains the benefits of BrainFitness.
Good thing, there’s still hope for our kids. We just need to find out where we could help them the most—what are their strengths and weaknesses, and that’s where BrainFit Studio can support them.
Brain Fitness is about having high-level metal processes to become more apparent from more efficient and strong connections in the brain. It involves activities that strengthen existing while at the same time building new brain connections as well.
My Kyle does an exercise on a trampoline.

Kendrick Stock gets a high five from the instructor.

A brain’s fitness level influences the 5 pillars of cognitive development namely: attention, visual, auditory, sensory-motor and social-emotional. These brain pillars play a great impact on how we are able to acquire new knowledge, retain information, apply learning and perform towards excellence.

Kids does a yoga-like position for an active brain function.

We were able to learn about how BrainFit Studio can help our children when they invited selected bloggers to attend their mini bloggers’ conference in line with their upcoming 1st Philippine Brain-based Conference dubbed as: Brain Fitness: The Key to Success in Learning Among Children to be held this March 25, 2013, at the Centro Escolar University Auditorium in Mendiola, Manila (near Malacanan Palace) from 1:00PM-5PM.  ATTENDANCE IS FREE, but pre-registration is a MUST! BrainFit Studio is inviting all educators, students, and parents to attend the said conference. It had no less than renowned speech pathologist and author of books, Martha S. Burns, Ph.D, who’s flying over from the US just to share her expertise on language development and auditory processing disorders. She is a lecturer on neuroscience applications to education. Dr. Burns is also an Associate Professor at Northwestern University and a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. For 35 years, she served on the medical staff of Evanston-Northwestern Hospital. Her area of specialization is language and brain development.

It all seem like a really good stretch but the kids are having fun.

A balance of the brain and balance of the body.

BrainFit’s programmes are backed by scientific data that demonstrate their efficacy. They are suitable for children and teens ages 4 years old to 18 years old. Don’t worry though, as each child’s programs are personalized to suit each child’s needs and unique abilities. This ensures the brain to become engaged at optimal intensity. Backed by neuro-scientific principles, BrainFit are confident to deliver effective and enduring results.

Some more exercise for the brain.

What I am amazed about Brain Fit Studio is the CognitiveMap, which is an objective assessment of one’s child’s brain. It is an evaluation tool that determines which of your child’s 5 brain pillars need enhancement. It also acts as a “before snapshot” for pre- and post-program comparison.  BrainFit conducts another assessment at the end of the programme and it allows them to see and determine the progress in your child’s Brain Fitness levels.

Strong brain fitness builds mental foundations needed for life-long learning success and for achieving excellent academic grades. With fit brains, children will find it easier and more enjoyable to learn new things be it a subject in school, languages to learn, or any new skill for that matter. Such sense of achievement is tantamount to higher self-esteem and confidence equals a happier child.
More than 80% of parents report improvements in their children within ten weeks. Many children not only perform better in school but also demonstrate higher self-esteem and greater interest in learning.  According to Dr. Steven Miller, Research Neuropsychologist, CA, USA, “Brainfit Studio is at the forefront of applying neuro-scientific principles in boosting Brain Fitness. Their programmes are implemented according to the best practices for maximum efficacy and impact.”

Still curious about how our kids can benefit through BrainFit? I personally encourage all parents as well as teachers to come and attend the 1st BrainFit Conference on March 25 (Monday) at the CEU Auditorium, Mendiola, Manila from 1PM-5PM. Admission is Free! Pre-register online via:

You can defy early signs of aging with this box of AVON Anti-wrinkle serum.

Guess what I got from the mail yesterday? I’ve just found out that I am one of the lucky ones who got a free ANEW CLINICAL PRO LINE CORRECTOR from AVON! For those not yet familiar with this product, AVON’s ANEW CLINICAL PRO LINE CORRECTOR is the latest and said to be the most advance and fastest wrinkle fighter ever! They are claiming that it is the first skincare with patented A-F 33 or amino-fill 33 that is exclusively to AVON brand. What’s more, it’s inspired by Nobel Prize winning research.
So the very minute I received it from the mail, I immediately opened its blue box and checked it out. Hmm, it looks promising enough. The box says that since the year 1992, Avon has pioneered anti-aging skin care first in the market when they launched AHA, being the first to introduce dermatological –inspired products in 2003 and the first to introduce injectable grade ingredients in 2009. And now, in 2013, they are introducing another innovation in beauty products that claims to defy aging and wrinkles through ANEW CLINICAL A-F- 33. In just seven days, deep wrinkles are said to start fading and with continued use, it clearly defies aging. It even claims 100 percent of women in the clinical study showed improvement in their wrinkle lines. And they were able to achieve all of these in just two weeks time. Pretty amazing huh! I am becoming excited to use the product…
With regards to the information indicated on the box, deep wrinkles begin to fade in just 7 days, and in 14 days it shows improvement on fine wrinkles, by the third week, it reduces wrinkles in three dimensions: depth, length and number. On their clinical study, six out of ten women considered cosmetic procedure who tried this product said that it improved their skin so much so that they decided to postpone it.
I’ll let you guys know if it will work its wonders on me and my fine lines (I am no longer in my youth remember? I am in my early 30’s and it’s never too late to start an anti-aging skin regimen), laugh lines, crow’s feet and wrinkles. But for now, allow me to open a sachet and see if it truly is the product we’ve all been waiting for. 

Celebrity stylist and blogger Jenni Epperson at SM Marikina.

Renowned blogger, celebrity stylist and fashion columnist Jenni Epperson recently gave a free seminar cum public talk on food, blogging and photography tips in celebration of the Food + Wine Pairing held at the atrium of SM Marikina. Ms. Epperson, in her usual bubbly self, shared how she started to be noticed in the industry as well as her humble beginnings. “I had actually started blogging online through my Multiply account and then moved on in having my own domain name,” says Epperson.  According to her, she would just post her day-to-day thoughts as well as fashionable advices on her blog and pretty soon she gets feedback from readers across the globe. “I didn’t really know I’d have more and more people who’d compliment me with what I write about,” Epperson adds.

Jenni Epperson talks about food and fashion
Since her better half is into photography, Jenni Epperson says it’s but natural for her to delve into it as well. “My husband Tom Epperson is the professional one, although I get a lot of tips from him and his work for Instagram and pictures I’ve taken for my blog.” During the said event, Ms. Epperson shared a few tips on how to properly get the right angle for food photography. She also cited some cases as to how bloggers could get sponsors from well-known brands. “You just have to be true to yourself. My readers would sometimes say how “real” I could be because I kind of say whatever it is that I want to say. But then, I had to be honest—I just couldn’t support brands or endorse those that I do not believe in.”

Jenni wows the crowd with her wit.

Indeed, it was a day of fun filled with some Q & A coming from the audience where Ms. Epperson gamely answered with her wit and chic attitude. The said event was made possible through SM Marikina.
