DTI Gears Up for the 2025 National Trade Fair, Championing Green Innovation and Filipino MSMEs

Get ready to experience Filipino innovation at its finest! The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) proudly announces the much-anticipated return of the DTI Bagong Pilipinas National Trade Fair, happening from July 23 to 27, 2025, at the Megatrade Halls of SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

Now in its latest edition, the fair brings together close to 300 carefully selected exhibitors from across the Philippines. These enterprises will showcase a dynamic range of proudly local products—from heirloom crafts and wellness essentials to upcycled home décor, contemporary fashion, and environmentally responsible solutions.

This year’s lineup promises not just variety but excellence, as each exhibitor has been chosen for their commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability.

More Than a Trade Event

What sets the National Trade Fair apart is its deeper mission. It isn’t just about displaying and selling goods; it’s about celebrating the stories, cultures, and communities that shape them. Supporting the Tatak Pinoy Strategy, the 2025 edition reinforces DTI’s push to build a dynamic domestic economy where homegrown brands and products can flourish, not only locally but also on the global stage. Through innovation, creative design, and responsible production, these MSMEs are showing how Filipino enterprises can lead in a fast-evolving world.

What’s New This Year

“The National Trade Fair is more than a marketplace—it’s a national platform for promoting Filipino excellence, innovation, and sustainability. This 2025 edition goes even further, introducing new features to spotlight game-changing green technologies,” said DTI Assistant Secretary Nylah Rizza D. Bautista, who heads the Competitiveness and Innovation Group.

She further explained that unlike the National Food Fair, which focuses on culinary enterprises, the National Trade Fair highlights a wider spectrum of Filipino creativity. From fashion and home furnishings to digital innovations and natural wellness products, the NTF offers a rich and immersive experience. Assistant Secretary Bautista emphasized that this year’s fair continues to promote the use of Philippine natural raw materials and highlights the potential of green technologies in helping MSMEs scale up and compete more effectively.

Spotlight on Sustainability and Innovation

One of the major highlights of this year’s fair is the Philippine Sustainability Pavilion. Here, visitors will find breakthrough eco-innovations and green technologies taking center stage.

The pavilion brings to light how indigenous and natural materials—such as bamboo, abaca, and native grasses—are transformed into high-value products suitable for both local consumption and international markets. It is a striking example of how environmental consciousness and cultural heritage can be woven together to create products that are beautiful, functional, and sustainable.

But the fair offers more than just shopping and exhibits. Attendees will also enjoy a rich learning environment through business development seminars, live skills demonstrations, and themed exhibit zones. These are designed to help MSMEs improve their market access, develop innovative products, and accelerate their growth. Whether you’re a buyer, a budding entrepreneur, or simply someone who values Filipino craftsmanship, there is something to learn and appreciate at every corner of the event.

A Legacy of Success

The National Trade Fair has consistently proven to be a powerful platform for MSMEs. In 2024, it featured 273 MSMEs and welcomed 27,909 visitors. The event generated Php 73.2 million in total sales, including Php 62.12 million in cash sales and booked orders. These numbers reflect not only the public’s growing support for locally made products but also the strategic value of this event in helping small businesses grow.

As the 2025 edition unfolds, it carries the momentum of past successes while pushing toward new heights. With growing interest in sustainability, quality local goods, and proudly Filipino innovations, the fair is expected to deliver even greater impact this year.

Everyone’s Invited

The 2025 DTI-Bagong Pilipinas National Trade Fair will run for five days, from July 23 to 27, at SM Megamall. Admission is free and open to all. This is your chance to discover the latest in proudly local design, support MSMEs from all over the country, and take part in a movement that’s building a more sustainable and globally competitive Philippine economy.

Go, Grow, and Glow your way to health

The balanced diet covers all the bases of nutritional needs, says MakatiMed dietician

Atkins, South Beach, Keto, Master Cleanse: How many of us are still on these diets? If the answer is “none,” it’s no surprise.

“Trendy fad diets may promise quick weight loss, but they are unsustainable in the long run,” shares Maricar Esculto-Khan, MD, a nutritionist-dietician, internist and medical nutrition specialist from top hospital in the Philippines Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed). “Diets that exclude one or more food groups put your health at risk. High-protein diets, for instance, lack fiber and essential vitamins and minerals found in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, which you need to fortify your immune system against disease. A protein-rich diet may also strain your kidneys and liver, and increase LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol, which is detrimental to heart health.”

By contrast, back-to-basics diets that account for all food groups are not only workable, they’re healthy, too, says MakatiMed. “Balanced diets address all of our daily nutritional requirements in a wide variety of foods, so we feel satisfied and not deprived,” underlines Dr. Esculto-Khan.

One such is Go, Grow, and Glow, an eating plan that incorporates at least one food from each category. “Go” refers to energy-giving foods like carbohydrates: Think rice, pasta, bread, corn, and sweet potatoes. “Grow” includes foods that are excellent sources of protein, which our body needs for growth and repair: Pork, beef, poultry, seafood, beans, tofu, nuts, and dairy products are good examples. Fruits and vegetables fall under “Glow,” the foods that strengthen the immune system, support digestive function, and enhance skin, hair, and eyes.

“Compared to other diets, this is easy to follow and maintain,” says Dr. Esculto-Khan “For breakfast ‘Go’ could be bread, ‘Grow’ could be an egg, and ‘Glow’ could be a slice of papaya. For lunch, Go, Grow, and Glow could mean a plate of rice, fish, and veggies. And dinner’s Go, Grow, and Glow could be mashed potatoes, a piece of chicken, and side salad. You could be a meat lover or a vegetarian; either way, Go, Grow, Glow can be adjusted to your preferred eating habits.”

Of course, what we eat is just part of the equation to staying fit and healthy. For Go, Grow, Glow to truly work, observe portion control and incorporate exercise into your routine—or at least stay active by walking whenever you can. “We Filipinos love our rice, and if we pile scoops of them on our plates yet stay sedentary, we don’t reap Go, Grow, Glow’s health benefits,” reminds Dr. Esculto-Khan.

Loop your doctor in before you start the diet. “Although Go, Grow, and Glow is generally healthy and safe, it’s always best to let your family physician in on your plan,” says Dr. Esculto-Khan. “A diabetic may be asked to replace refined white rice with brown rice, while a hypertensive can choose fish and lean cuts of chicken instead of red meat.”

“That’s the beauty of Go, Grow, Glow,” says Dr. Esculto-Khan. “Because all food groups are represented, the combination possibilities.

PPO champions Filipino artistry with heartfelt symphonies in recent UK Tour

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO), the premier orchestra of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), successfully championed the brilliance of Filipino talent to international audiences on its recent concert tour to the United Kingdom (UK).

“It was a hectic schedule for the PPO with nine concerts in 11 days, but the orchestra was up to the challenge. They were inspired, and their performances showed it,” said CCP President Kaye C. Tinga.

The PPO delivered exceptional performances night after night, feeding its audiences with heartfelt symphonies. Music critic Garry Fraser from the Perth Festival of the Arts described the tour as an exhibition of “skill and stamina,” exceptionally guided by its music director and principal conductor, Maestro Grzegorz Nowak.

Fraser continued: “They are as good as any you’ll hear and excellent in every single department, as fresh and engaging in the last bar of the Beethoven as they were in the first bar of the Bizet. The PPO and [its] conductor, Grzegorz Nowak, believe in value for money.”

Maestro Nowak leads the PPO to greater heights with UK Tour

Nearly three years have passed since Maestro Grzegorz Nowak was appointed conductor of the PPO, following an extensive search in 2022. He succeeded the esteemed Maestro Yoshikazu Fukumura and has since guided the nation’s premier orchestra to unprecedented artistic heights. With the successful conclusion of the UK Concert Tour, the maestro continues to shape the PPO’s legacy with unwavering vision attuned to musical excellence.

Critics David Gray and Paul Gray wrote in their review: “Conductor Grzegorz Nowak captured the individual flavour of each of the national dances. We were served up a stately Czardas and a friskily cheeky Neapolitan Dance.”

The tender lyricism of PPO’s concertmaster and artist-in-residence

Together with Maestro Nowak, PPO’s very own artist-in-residence and guest concertmaster Diomedes Saraza Jr. and top-tier guest soloists cellist Wen-Sinn Yang and pianist Mark Bebbington displayed profound musicality in the tour.

Saraza Jr. graced the UK Tour with poised clarity and lyricism. At the age of 12, he won first place in the violin category at the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) in 2002. He is the first Filipino violin soloist to perform in Carnegie Hall.

“Diomedes Saraza Jr., with flawless intonation, expressive vibrato, and the sweetest tone, gave
a rhapsodic and captivating account of the piece [Bizet’s Carmen],” said Donal Hurley in
Edinburgh Music Review.

Saraza’s monumental nine-day concert tour with the PPO might have ended, but his encore of the Philippine folk song Leron, Leron Sinta lives on in the audience’s hearts. Fraser described the interpretation as a “blistering display of virtuosic dynamism and technical adeptness”.

Stylish interpretations of a cellist and a pianist

With heartfelt sensitivity, cellist Yang and pianist Mark Bebbington conversed with the PPO through virtuosic elements. Yang played Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variation with an “enjoyment passed over to the audience in no small measure,” according to Fraser. He added, “It’s easy to run out of superlatives, such was his [Yang] fantastic display of skill, technique, and dazzling fingerboard gymnastics.”

Yang rose to popularity after winning first prize at the Geneva International Music Competition in 1991. He later became a regular guest at the international music festivals in St. Moritz, Davos, Biel, Dresden, Weilberg, and at the Ludwigsburg Castle Festivals. Since 2004, Yang has been a of Violoncello at the Academy of Music and Theater in Munich.

Meanwhile, Bebbington, a certified champion of British music, enchanted audiences with his interpretations of Delius’ Piano Concerto. Saraza labelled him as the tour’s “hidden gem” when the revered Maestro Nowak shone marvelously with the piece.

Bebbington had previously toured with the London Philharmonic, Philharmonia, and Royal Philharmonic orchestras, as well as the London Mozart Players, Orchestra of the Swan, and BBC Concert Orchestra.

The PPO’s rousing success in the UK

Made possible by IMG Artists, the PPO performed in nine different venues, which require varying technical precision. Despite standing on unfamiliar stages, the orchestra received the same brand of adoration for its unparalleled commitment to music.

Highlighting Filipino excellence while strengthening cultural ties between the Philippines and the UK, the PPO UK Tour commenced at the Bristol Beacon in England on May 13 and concluded

Back-to-School Hacks with Gcash

There’s something exciting about seeing our kids step into the new school year: new books, new teachers, new friends, and new chances to grow. But let’s be honest: the back-to-school season doesn’t always feel like a fresh start.

We go full-on with our budgeting, trying to juggle all the expenses. But no matter how good you are at handling things, there are days that still get you thinking: Is there a smarter way to do this? How can I make things easier and more efficient for my child—and for me?

The good news is you don’t need to figure it all out on your own. There’s a way to make all your expenses feel a lot lighter so you can focus on being present for your kids.

So, if you’ve ever felt the pressure during this season, don’t worry! You’re not alone. Here’s how you can make some of the most common struggles every parent goes through during the back-to-school season lighter:

School supplies shopping is time-consuming

Before the start of the school year, there's so much to do. With everything else on your plate, you just want it done, mabilis, hassle-free, at tipid.

Good news, moms—you can Scan QR with GCash at stores nationwide! It’s quick, cashless, and convenient. If you’re a Laking National member, you get ₱200 off a minimum purchase of ₱1,000 when you pay using GCash at National Bookstore. You have instant savings!

Stressed about paying the tuition fee

Aside from the usual bills and daily expenses, tuition is one of the biggest burdens every parent has to deal with during back-to-school season. Luckily, you can also breathe easy knowing that you can turn to GLoan for these moments.

GLoan is the personal cash loan feature that lets you borrow instantly up to ₱150,000 so tuition and other school expenses feel lighter, even if you need to pay everything you need to pay all at the same time. You need to make an upgrade

LBC Express, the Philippines’ leading logistics and money services provider, has partnered with BidaBoss, the first pioneering dropshipping platform in the country. Set to officially launch this June, LBC will provide warehousing, distribution, and last-mile delivery support to power BidaBoss’ nationwide operations, so that business ownership is more accessible for Filipinos.

How diabetes can impact your body from head to toe

Manage diabetes well

Experts refer to diabetes as a “silent killer”—an ominous label, for sure, but definitely not an exaggeration. Caused by chronic high blood sugar due to the inability of the body to use or produce insulin (the hormone that converts food to energy), diabetes can have no obvious symptoms for many years. When signs do appear, however, they put you at risk for certain diseases or leave you with irreparable damage.

“Diabetes impacts our body literally from head to toe,” says Jimmy B. Aragon, MD from the Diabetes Care Center of top hospital in the Philippines Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed). “That’s why we always advocate for early detection, so treatment can begin before the effects become irreversible.”

Long-term exposure to blood sugar damages our blood vessels, which leads to a host of complications, some of them life-threatening:

Cardiovascular disease. “People with diabetes are more at risk of getting a stroke and heart attack,” reveals Dr. Aragon. “Damaged blood vessels become stiff and develop plaque, hampering oxygen and blood flow to vital organs like the brain and heart.”

Visual problems. “Damaged blood vessels in the eyes can lead to diabetic retinopathy, a condition that blurs vision and could progress to blindness,” shares Dr. Aragon. “Cataracts or a cloudiness in your eye’s lens and glaucoma or the damage of an optic nerve are also traced to diabetes.”

Kidney disease. “When high blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels and filters of the kidneys, it impairs the kidneys’ ability to filter out toxic waste from our system,” says Dr. Aragon. “The kidneys’ impaired function may eventually lead to dialysis or a kidney transplant.”

Neuropathy. Nerve damage due to high blood sugar usually presents itself in the legs and feet. “The sensation is one of pins and needles,” explains Dr. Aragon. “It could also manifest as numbness, and the loss of feeling makes you unaware of injuries on your feet.” People with diabetes are also known for their slow-healing wounds in the feet—a result, yet again, of damaged blood vessels and poor circulation.

A frequent need to pee, dry skin, fatigue, and unquenchable thirst are other signs of diabetes.

Managing blood sugar is the first step to controlling diabetes. “The two most common tests to check for diabetes are Fasting Blood Sugar and HbA1c,” says Dr. Aragon. “The former measures blood sugar after eight hours of fasting, the latter measures your average blood sugar levels in the last 2-3 months.” Type 2 diabetes (wherein the body cannot make insulin or is resistant to it) is the more common form of disease, while type 1 diabetes (an autoimmune disorder that attacks the cells that make insulin) is usually diagnosed in children and young adults.

Aim for a normal fasting blood sugar between 70 and 100 mg/dl (or (3.9 and 5.6 mmol/L). “You’re considered prediabetes if your blood sugar runs from 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L). A result of 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L) or higher means you have diabetes,” reminds Dr. Aragon.

Medications are available to either lower blood sugar levels or aid the body in using insulin more effectively. MakatiMed also shares some simple lifestyle changes to keep blood sugar within normal levels.

Dr. Aragon advises replacing carbs with low-glycemic whole grains and fiber, and hydrating with water, not sugary drinks, to manage blood sugar. The doctor also recommends staying active. Even a 30-minute walk after meals helps lower blood sugar and aids weight loss for better overall health.

Given that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing serious foot problems, Dr. Aragon stresses moisturizing and cleaning feet, and wearing socks to prevent sores. Diabetes also affects many of our organs, so the expert emphasizes the importance of monitoring any changes not only with your blood sugar but with your eyes, kidneys, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

“Diabetes doesn’t have to be your ‘silent killer,’” asserts Dr. Aragon. “With your doctor’s guidance and your compliance, you can live a full and active life and do what non-diabetics can do, within healthy limits, of course.”
