Kublai Millan Presents "Land of Premise" at The Art Gallery of The Manila Hotel

Acclaimed Filipino painter and sculptor Kublai Millan is set to unveil his latest exhibit, Land of Premise, at The Manila Hotel’s Art Gallery from August 1 to 31, 2024.

Born Rey Mudjahid Ponce Millan, Kublai Millan is a third-generation descendant of settlers from Ilocos, who grapples with this legacy through his art. Land of Premise seeks to reclaim the original promise of Mindanao—a land of peace, prosperity, and unity—while exploring the complex history and unfulfilled potential of the southernmost island of the Philippines.

"This exhibit is a call to action," says Kublai. "We must remember the premise on which Mindanao was built—its strengths, its unique identity, and its people. Words alone cannot build a future. Action and shared resources are what's needed."

Kublai Millan

Kublai emphasizes that this exhibit is about the entire Mindanao island and its unrealized potential. Land of Premise serves as a bridge, inviting viewers to learn about Mindanao, connect with its stories, and envision a future where the island lives up to its original promise. “I’m taking this chance as an artist to visualize Mindanao as a truly land of promise fulfilled. Inviting other people to learn, identify, connect, and commune with this blessed land. Words cannot build a future, only actions and resources can. Know the premise so we can conceive a fulfillable promise,” he added.

Land of Premise 1

Land of Premise, comprising a total of 14 paintings, promises to be a feast for the senses, featuring Millan’s signature blend of vibrant colors and intricate details that have captivated art enthusiasts worldwide. Known for his unique style that combines traditional Filipino motifs with contemporary techniques, Kublai 's work is a reflection of his deep connection to his cultural heritage and his relentless pursuit of artistic excellence. His paintings are not only visually stunning but also carry profound messages about identity, history, and social issues.

The exhibit will transport viewers to a captivating realm where imagination and reality converge. By delving into the sources of inspiration for his paintings, viewers can gain insight into the creative process that drives his work and the underlying messages he seeks to convey through his art.

Land of Premise 2

The Manila Hotel's Art Gallery provides the perfect backdrop for Kublai 's exhibit, offering a sophisticated and elegant setting that complements the beauty of his masterpieces. This collaboration between The Manila Hotel and Kublai Millan is sure to attract art enthusiasts from all walks of life.

CCP, PBBY SALUTE EXCEPTIONAL TALENTS IN FILIPINO CHILDREN'S LITERATURE ON NATIONAL CHILDREN’S BOOK DAY

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), in collaboration with the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY), celebrates the National Children’s Book Day (NCBD) this July. This celebration is to embrace the transformative power of literature to fuel curiosity and ignite imagination among children.

Central to this celebration are the prestigious PBBY-Salanga and PBBY-Alcala Prizes, which recognize exemplary works in writing and illustration. This year, the PBBY-Salanga Prize, paying homage to esteemed journalist and writer Alfredo Navarro Salanga, lauds exceptional story writing that captivates young audiences. The distinguished PBBY-Salanga Prize recognizes the literary brilliance of Eric R. Roxas for his captivating narrative entitled “Monina’s Many Moles” transcends boundaries and inspires young minds Illustrator Marcus Vito Z. Nada receives the illustrious PBBY-Alcala Prize for his artistic prowess in enriching the world of children’s literature with captivating visuals. The coveted PBBY-Alcala Prize, named in honor of National Artist Larry Alcala, celebrates the mastery of visual story writing, awarded to illustrators who skillfully bring children’s stories to life.

The NCBD celebration and awarding ceremony is scheduled for July 16, starting at 9:30am, at the Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez (CCP’s Blackbox Theater), featuring a musical performance by Ginger Karganilla and Billy Joel del Rosario, composed by Greg Zuniega; an enchanting story-telling by Philippine Information Agency (PIA) puppeteer; and the unveiling of exciting new children’s books. Following the theme "Payapa ang Puso ng Batang Nagbabasa," NCBD endeavors to foster a love for reading among children while championing the vibrant artistry of Filipino children's literature.

Payapa book fair will be at the basement level of the venue from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Books from Aklat Alamid, Aklat Mirasol, Southern Voices Printing Press, Street Tales and Supermaya will be sold at this event.

To join the festivities, a children’s book has to be donated to the registration desk on the day of the event. Registration starts at 9:00am. For the afternoon program, kindly register through this email ccpintertextualdivision@gmail.com

Inspire the Children of Cavite and Balay-aralan of Muntinlupa will be the recipients of the books donated by the attendees of the event. The gifting will be during the program. Observed every third Tuesday of July, the book day commemorates the pioneering publication of "Un Mono y Una Tortuga (The Monkey and The Turtle) written by Philippine hero Dr. Jose Rizal. In the story, the monkey and the turtle found a banana tree eloating in the river. Wanting to have the tree for themselves, the two friends decided to cut it in half. The monkey took the top part with the branches, while the turtle got the lower half with the roots. The two planted their parts. But soon the tree of the monkey died, while the turtle's tree grew and bore fruits.

Seeing the ripe banana fruits, the monkey volunteered to climb the tree and harvest the fruits. Contrary to his promise to give the fruits to the turtle, the monkey started eating and willing his tummy. The turtle got angry and nailed thorns and susong-paitan (a kind of thorny snail) on the trunk. As the monkey came down the tree, the thorns caused him much pain. He soon caught the turtle and decided to punish him. He asked the turtle what punishment he wanted - to crush him in the mortar or throw him in the river. Armed with wit, the turtle replied that he was afraid of the river because he might die from drowning. Noting the fear of the turtle, the monkey threw his rival into the river. The turtle swam away happily.

A timeless narrative that continues to inspire generations, the children's story has been told and retold through generations to teach about Filipino values and life lessons. There are numerous psychology studies that report the importance of stories to children in experiencing life events and processing their emotions. Human brains, studies showed, are programmed to see patterns and perceive sequences, and eventually store these patterns in long-term memory. These long-term memories eventually become the fundamentals of human existence. This is the reason children's books are effective teaching tools for children.

For other details and updates, please visit the CCP’s Intertextual Division Facebook Page, CCP’s and PBBY’s ofeicial websites, and their social media platforms on Facebook, X, TikTok, and Instagram.

What to do after hitting your head?

When British actor Natasha Richardson fell and hit her head during a beginner’s skiing lesson in Quebec, Canada in 2009, she didn’t give the mishap a second thought. After reportedly refusing medical attention twice, she gave in when she developed a headache and other worrisome symptoms. Transported to a hospital in Montreal, she was placed in the intensive care unit and pronounced brain dead. With not much left to do for her, her husband, fellow actor Liam Neeson flew her home to New York to be with family and friends. She passed away soon after.

Like Richardson, most of us would probably forgo a trip to the hospital when we accidentally bang our head in a fall or get hit by a hard object. “When we injure our arm or leg, we can see it through a bruise, wound, bump, or fracture,” says Cymbeline B. Perez-Santiago, MD, Chief of the Section of Neurology of the top hospital in the Philippines Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed). “But traumatic brain injury (TBI), or a sudden external force strong enough to move the brain within the skull, isn’t always visible.”

TBI can range from a mild and temporary bruise, wound, or tender bump on the head, to more serious and life-threatening conditions. “A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that leaves you feeling dazed and with a headache, neck pain, or changes in vision,” explains Dr. Perez-Santiago. “A contusion refers to bleeding in the brain substance or parenchyma, like a bruise of the brai8 tissue. A skull fracture means you cracked your skull bone, and the sharp broken bones could cut into your brain or an artery, resulting in a pooling of blood that presses against your brain.”

This pooling of blood is known as hematoma, and it can happen instantly upon impact to the head, or after several days and even weeks. Active bleeding can put pressure on the brain. “This puts you at risk for potential brain damage and even death,” adds Dr. Perez-Santiago.

For MakatiMed, no head injury is too minor or insignificant to take to a specialist. “Because some damage caused by a head injury happens over time, it’s still recommended that you see your doctor within a week of the accident. That way, they can request for follow-up imaging tests, check for new symptoms, or gauge whether existing symptoms have worsened or improved,” highlights Dr. Perez-Santiago.

If the head injury is minor

“Sit or lie comfortably with the head slightly elevated. Apply an ice pack on the injured site, and clean any surface wound with water and a wound disinfectant. Give an over-the- counter pain reliever in case of a headache,” says Dr. Perez-Santiago. “A person with a head injury doesn’t necessarily have to stay awake at all times, but make sure he or she can be woken up gently and respond in a normal way.”

If the head injury includes the following symptoms

“Vomiting, headaches and dizziness, double vision, confusion, memory loss, difficulty keeping awake, balance problems, trouble hearing and speaking, and pain that doesn’t go away even after taking a pain reliever are signs of a more serious injury,” notes Dr. Perez-Santiago. “Time is of the essence. Go to the nearest emergency room immediately.”

If the head injury presents symptoms days or weeks after the accident

“See your doctor as soon as possible for persistent headaches and nausea, memory and balance issues, one-sided weakness, disorientation, contusions, and increase in drowsiness,” asserts Dr. Perez-Santiago. “These are red flags that strongly indicate complications following the head injury.”

“Again, after you hit your head, it’s best to see a neurologist who can assess your condition and avert any problems that may arise from what you assumed was a minor accident,” reminds Dr. Perez-Santiago.

How to Support a Loved One in Residential Care

Supporting a loved one in residential care is a crucial and often challenging responsibility. The transition to residential care can be difficult for both the individual and their family. This blog aims to provide comprehensive guidance on how to effectively support a loved one in residential care, ensuring they feel valued, comfortable, and well-cared for.

Understanding Residential Care

What is Residential Care?

Residential care, also known as long-term care, involves providing live-in care for individuals who require assistance with daily activities. Preparing for the Transition

Discussing the Move

Open and honest communication is vital when discussing the transition to residential care. Include your loved one in the decision-making process as much as possible to respect their autonomy and preferences. Address their concerns, provide reassurance, and explain the benefits of residential care.

Choosing the Right Facility

Selecting the appropriate facility is critical. Consider the following factors:

 Location: Proximity to family and friends for regular visits.
 Services and Amenities: Ensure the facility offers necessary medical care,
recreational activities, and comfortable living arrangements.
 Staff: Assess the qualifications, experience, and demeanor of the staff.
 Reputation: Research reviews, ratings, and accreditations.

Personalizing Their Space

Make the new environment feel like home by personalizing your loved one’s living space. Bring familiar items such as photos, favorite books, and cherished mementos. This helps ease the transition and provides comfort.

Maintaining Regular Communication

Frequent Visits

Regular visits are essential to show your loved one that they are not forgotten and are still an important part of your life. Aim for consistency in your visits to create a predictable routine, which can be comforting.

Quality Time

During visits, engage in meaningful activities that your loved one enjoys. This could include playing games, watching movies, or simply having a heartfelt conversation. The quality of the interaction is more important than the duration.

Virtual Communication

For times when in-person visits are not possible, utilize technology to stay connected. Regular phone calls, video chats, and even sending letters or emails can help maintain a sense of closeness.

Advocating for Their Care

Understanding Their Needs

Take the time to understand your loved one’s specific needs and preferences. This knowledge will enable you to advocate effectively on their behalf.

Building Relationships with Staff

Establish a positive relationship with the facility’s staff. Regularly communicate with caregivers, nurses, and administrators to stay informed about your loved one’s condition and care plan. Being involved and approachable can help ensure your loved one receives the best possible care.

Monitoring Their Well-Being

Keep an eye on your loved one’s physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Look out for any changes in their behavior, mood, or health, and address any concerns promptly with the staff. Regularly review their care plan and ensure it is being followed appropriately.

Supporting Their Emotional and Mental Health

Encouraging Social Interaction

Social engagement is crucial for emotional and mental well-being. Encourage your loved one to participate in the facility’s social activities and events. These interactions can help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Providing Emotional Support

Listen to your loved one’s feelings and concerns. Validate their emotions and provide reassurance. Sometimes, just being there to listen can make a significant difference.

Mental Stimulation

Engage your loved one in mentally stimulating activities. Puzzles, reading, writing, and memory games can help keep their mind active and sharp. Tailor these activities to their interests and cognitive abilities.

Ensuring Physical Health

Regular Medical Check-Ups

Ensure your loved one receives regular medical check-ups and any necessary treatments. Stay informed about their medical appointments and accompany them when possible.

Promoting Physical Activity

Encourage physical activity as appropriate for their health condition. Gentle exercises, walks,
or even participating in group fitness activities can help maintain their physical health and improve their mood.

Nutrition and Hydration

Monitor their diet to ensure they are receiving balanced, nutritious meals. Proper hydration is equally important. Discuss any dietary concerns with the facility’s nutritionist or staff.

Dealing with Challenges

Addressing Resistance

It’s common for individuals to resist the idea of moving to residential care. Be patient and understanding. Acknowledge their feelings and work together to find solutions that make the transition smoother.

Handling Behavioral Changes

Behavioral changes can occur, especially in individuals with dementia. Educate yourself about potential changes and how to respond appropriately. Seek support from the facility’s staff and consider joining support groups for families.

Managing Guilt and Grief

Family members often experience feelings of guilt or grief when placing a loved one in residential care. It’s important to recognize these emotions and seek support for yourself. Remember that seeking the best care for your loved one is an act of love.

Long-Term Support Strategies

Staying Informed

Continue educating yourself about your loved one’s condition and the best care practices. Attend workshops, read articles, and participate in support groups to stay informed.

Reviewing Care Plans

Regularly review and update your loved one’s care plan with the facility. Ensure it reflects their current needs and preferences.

Celebrating Milestones

Celebrate your loved one’s achievements and special occasions. Whether it’s a birthday, a recovery milestone, or simply a good day, acknowledging these moments can bring joy and a sense of normalcy.

Staying Connected with the Community

Involvement in Community Activities

Encourage your loved one to stay connected with the broader community. Many residential care facilities have partnerships with local organizations, schools, and volunteer groups.
Participation in community activities can provide a sense of purpose and belonging, enriching their social life and boosting their overall well-being.

Family Gatherings and Outings

Whenever possible, organize family gatherings and outings. Bringing your loved one home for special occasions or taking them out for a meal or a walk in the park can offer a refreshing change of scenery and reinforce family bonds. These moments of normalcy are vital for their emotional health and can help them feel included and cherished.

Conclusion

Supporting a loved one in residential care requires dedication, empathy, and active involvement. By maintaining regular communication, advocating for their needs, supporting their emotional and physical health, and addressing challenges proactively, you can ensure your loved one feels cared for and valued. Remember, your support and presence can significantly enhance their quality of life in residential care.
