CCP Arts Academy holds first national training for BCAED teachers, administrators with PNU

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), in partnership with the Philippine Normal University (PNU), conducts the first-ever national training program for Bachelor of Culture and Arts Education (BCAED) teachers and administrators on August 4 to 8, 2025, at Tanghalang Ignacio B. Gimenez (TIG), as well as at the PNU Gymnasium and selected rooms in its Bonifacio P. Sibayan (BPS) building.

The milestone event is part of the annual CCP Arts Academy, an innovative platform where teachers and administrators can converse on recent developments and future directions in reimagining the pre-service BCAED curriculum. The program will also highlight specialized teaching strategies through three components: PananawPalihan at Paglikha, and Pagbabahagi.

Winchester Lopez, dance supervisor for GWB Entertainment and Base Entertainment Asia’s production of Miss Saigon in 2024, is the resource speaker for dance alongside Philippine dance educator  Clarissa “Issa” Mijares.

Bianca Lopez-Aguila, former soprano of the Philippine Madrigal Singers and current member of The Nightingales, will discuss the art of musicality for voice ensemble.

Award-winning director Zig Dulay (Cinemalaya’s The Baseball Player and Black Rainbow, and GMA's Maria Clara at Ibarra) will also impart valuable knowledge on film, alongside acclaimed designer and Ternocon’s founding artistic consultant Gino Gonzales (Maria Clara at Ibarra).

Fresh from spearheading the special production of Ganito Na Kami Noon, Paano Na Ngayon? last July 19 in Intramuros, CCP Vice President and Artistic Director Dennis N. Marasigan will elaborate on the intricacy of devising theater productions.

National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee, known for iconic scripts Himala (1982), Moral (1982), and Karnal (1983), details how he describes Filipinos’ everyday lives in films. Lee also wrote Trip to Quiapo, the culmination of his 18 years of scriptwriting.

Meanwhile, the CCP Arts Academy’s third component, Pagbabahagi, emphasizes art as a powerful tool in education. It immerses teachers and students in the Philippine creative industry through the guidance of several resource speakers across various academic and cultural organizations.

Prof. Josue Greg Zuniega, the current Director of the Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA) and featured soloist of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Manila Symphony Orchestra, and Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra, serves as the resource speaker for music.

Nanding Josef, Artistic Director of Tanghalang Pilipino Inc. (TP), will focus on sharing TP's KAPWA as a philosophy and pedagogy in Philippine theater, while theater-making will be expounded by award-winning director Marco Viaña.

Currently serving as the President of the Philippine Folk Dance Society and as the CCP’s Chief Culture and Arts Officer, Ronnie Mirabuena shares his expertise and passion for enriching Filipino dances within the nation and on international platforms.

Rica Estrada Uson, the Officer-in-Charge of the CCP Visual Arts and Museum Division, imparts valuable knowledge on the visual arts, drawing on her involvement in various organizations, including the Association of Greater Manila Area Museums, the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, and the Asia Pacific Network for Cultural Education and Research.

Mae Caralde, Broadcast and New Media Division Chief of the CCP, will discuss creating film-making alongside the bright future of Philippine cinema. Meanwhile, Associate Artistic Director of CCP’s Arts Education Department Eva Mari Salvador spearheads the conversation on navigating the performing arts.

The CCP Arts Academy aims to equip “future-ready” arts educators, scholars, and practitioners with artistic and teaching skills. The national forum curated modules aligned with the current learning competencies of BCAED students, cultivating their knowledge on art education and production. To advance their artistic development and critical thinking skills, the invited teacher-applicants will participate in a mentoring and critiquing process facilitated by a pool of revered speakers.

The CCP, through its Arts Academy, fulfills its promise to integrate Philippine arts and culture into everyday life. The national training also fosters camaraderie within a community bound by the profound passion for understanding the Philippines’ cultural tapestry. While teasing a deeper appreciation and admiration for the nation’s heritage, the CCP reaffirms its dedication to supporting the professional and artistic growth of Filipino educators and students.

Elevate your moviegoing experience at Gateway Cineplex 18

There’s nothing like going to the movies. As the lights dim and as the screen comes alive, you are instantly transported to new worlds. There you experience a plethora of stories and experience different lives. It is escape, exploration, and discovery all at the same time. It allows us to delve into our shared human condition—deepening our understanding and broadening our horizon. It is nothing short of magical.

And that transformative power of cinema is exactly what’s celebrated at Gateway Cineplex 18.

“Movies are a way to escape, but they also bring us together and connect us with one another,” Irene Jose, COO of Uniprom Inc. said. “We know our moviegoers want to be immersed in the story, which is why we’ve made it a point to deliver an exceptional cinema experience. And now, we’re taking it even further by introducing unique, first-of-its-kind concepts here in the country.”

With 18 theaters across Gateway Mall 1 and the Gateway Mall 2, it is the country’s largest cinema complex, built for both casual moviegoers and dedicated film lovers.

The original Gateway Cineplex at Gateway Mall 1 set the standard with 10 thoughtfully designed cinemas by international consultant Ian Riches. Each theater features digital sound, Boral acoustic walls, and full stadium seating for clear sightlines.

“Gateway Cineplex 18 gives you choices to make your moviegoing experience truly extraordinary. Whatever you need, there’s a theater here for you! Wherever you sit, we make sure the sound, the visuals, and the comfort are exactly how you want them,” Jose said.

The new wing at Gateway Mall 2 raises the bar further. It adds eight more cinemas, including an impact theater with a curved sixty-foot screen. Across the entire complex, Dolby Atmos and Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound bring clear, detailed audio to every seat.

With its central location, wide range of theaters, and advanced cinema technology, Gateway Cineplex 18 is also an ideal venue for film festivals, block screenings, advance premieres, and other special events. The array of cinema sizes makes it ideal for both intimate gatherings and large-scale screenings.

Beyond being a venue for events and screenings, Gateway Cineplex 18 reimagines what a night at the movies can be with the introduction of premium concepts that combine the joy of watching a movie with gastronomic masterpieces.

At Gateway Mall 1, the World Kitchens Platinum Cinema offers 40 Lazy-Z-Boy recliners, creating an intimate setting. It is equipped with Digital Dolby Surround Sound and a high- performance projection system paired with a high-gain screen for sharper, brighter visuals. Each ticket includes a choice of delectable options especially curated by the chefs of World Kitchens at Gateway Mall 2, with more dishes available à la carte in the adjoining lounge.

Meanwhile, at Gateway Mall 2, the Wolfgang’s Premiere Lounge blends luxury dining with a private cinema feel. It is the only cinema in the world to feature a Wolfgang’s Steakhouse menu. Inside, laser projection paired with a Perlux Screen delivers vivid images, while Dolby Digital 7.1 Surround Sound adds depth to every scene. With only 120 seats across two halls, it offers a quiet and focused way to watch a film.

“We wanted to take the idea of a ‘movie night’ and take it up a notch. World Kitchens Platinum Cinema gives you a cinematic escape paired with flavors from around the world. Wolfgang’s Premiere Lounge takes it to another level—it’s a unique mix of fine dining and premium moviegoing you won’t find anywhere else. CCP’s National Theatre Live explores mortality and morality in tragic drama classics Hamlet and A Streetcar Named Desire

Hamlet

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), through its groundbreaking program CCP National Theatre Live, traverses the complex human mind in classics “Hamlet” and “A  Streetcar Named Desire” this July.

Shot live from the National Theatres in London, Hamlet returns to the Philippine shore this July 29, 6:00 p.m., at Glorietta 4 Cinema 4 in Makati City, while A Streetcar Named Desire will premiere at the Ayala Malls Vertis North & Ayala Malls Central Bloc, Cebu on the same date and time.

The downward spiral of a vengeful son

Watch Prince Hamlet’s slow descent to madness after his father’s ghosts reveal the truth about his own death. Academy Award-winning actor Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) plays the titular character in William Shakespeare's most famous play.

Directed by Lyndsey Turner and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, this version of Hamlet seems to dissect the Prince of Denmark and his darkening world with political precision and psychological insight. The staging of the Shakespearean tragedy has been hailed for its acting and visual modern setting, emphasizing the continuing relevance of the classic play in today’s generation.

This world-renowned Elizabethan classic explores the complexity of the human psyche and the consequences of love, revenge and grief. For its broadcast debut in 2015, Hamlet broke all records and became the fastest-selling event in London theater history. Tickets were sold out before rehearsals at the theater even began.

What desire does to the mind

A Streetcar Named Desire

Gillian Anderson (Sex Education), Vanessa Kirby (The Crown), and Ben Foster (Lone Survivor) lead the cast in Tennessee Williams’ timeless masterpiece: A Streetcar Named Desire

In this play, as Blanche’s fragile world crumbles, she turns to her sister Stella for solace. But her downward spiral brings her face to face with the brutal, unforgiving Stanley Kowalski.

From visionary director Benedict Andrews, this acclaimed production was filmed live during a sold-out run at the Young Vic Theatre in 2014.

Published in 1947, during the aftermath of the Second World War, this masterpiece revolves around the taboo themes of class tensions, female sexuality, homosexuality, and male domination – all of which simultaneously coexisted with the social dilemmas of the time.

A Streetcar Named Desire had its first staging on December 3, 1947, with the performance ending with a short, surprised silence before a thunder of applause that lasted 30 minutes.

Bringing London’s bests to the Philippine screens

Committed to the preservation and promotion of the arts, CCP’s National Theatre Live, in partnership with National Theatre Live London and Ayala Malls Cinemas, aims to make world-class theatre performances more accessible to Filipinos and ingrain a deeper appreciation for the performing arts.

Since its launch in June 2009, National Theatre Live broadcasts the best of British theater live from the London stage to cinemas around the world. NTL films their plays in front of live theater audiences, but optimized for the big screen and made accessible to theater fans outside of the United Kingdom.

Regular ticket prices are PHP300 in Makati and Cebu, and PHP350 in Vertis North, with special ticket price for students at PHP150 upon presentation of valid ID. Visit the cinema ticket booth or book online via www.sureseats.com

How to get relief from travel constipation

When traveling, don't just sit and sleep. Walking around simulates muscle contractions in the digestive system, which helps you poop.

So you’re on a vacation—and apparently, so is your ability to poop. What is it about going on trips that suddenly make our bathroom habit so difficult and straining, even to the most regular among us?

“The infrequent or irregular passing of stool when you’re on a vacation is so common, there’s actually a name for it—traveler’s constipation,” says Frederick D. Leelin, MD, a gastroenterologist from top hospital in the Philippines Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed). “If your travel involves flight, the constipation is likely due to dehydration from dry airplane air. Hours of sitting prevent muscles from contracting to help move the food you eat through your digestive system. Crossing time zones throws your circadian rhythm out of whack, messing up not just your sleep routine but your regular bowel movement too.”

Traveler’s constipation also happens when vacationers put their healthy eating habits on hold, indulging in fried and fatty food instead of fiber-rich fruits and greens, which are guaranteed to make you go. “But traveler’s constipation can simply be caused by your being in new and unfamiliar territory,” adds Dr. Leelin. “When there are passengers waiting in line for you to finish using the plane’s restroom, you tend to get self-conscious and hold it in.”

Thankfully, the condition is temporary and can even be resolved while you’re still on holiday with a few simple tricks from MakatiMed:

Drink. From during the flight to when you’re exploring tourist attractions and sitting down to sample local cuisine, drinking softens stool, making it easier to pass. “Choose water over soda and alcohol. Both have diuretic properties, which will just get you dehydrated,” advises Dr. Leelin.

Eat. “Fruits are a tasty and healthy way to stay hydrated. Apples and pears have high water content, while papaya and prunes are natural laxatives,” the doctor explains. “Vegetables, of course, are an excellent source of fiber and water, which you need. Include leafy greens like broccoli, kale, cabbage, and lettuce in your meals.”

Move. Don’t spend your holidays just sitting and sleeping. “Walk as much as you can, and use your hotel’s gym or pool to squeeze in some exercise. Physical activity stimulates muscle contractions in the digestive system, which helps you poop,” reminds Dr. Leelin.

Get a little help. If you still haven’t gone and your constipation’s making you bloated and gassy, relieve yourself with an over-the-counter laxative. Teas with senna and powdered drinks containing psyllium fiber are more “natural” laxatives that also do the job nicely. “Timing is of the essence when it comes to laxatives,” warns Dr. Leelin. “Laxatives take effect between 6-12 hours, so if you have a full day of plans and don’t have access to a bathroom, make sure you do your business before you leave your accommodations.”
