The Joyful Connection: How Food Keeps Us Happy

Food serves as more than just sustenance; it embodies a joyful connection that nourishes bodies, minds, and souls. This post explores the profound impact of food on well-being and happiness. From the sensory pleasure of eating to the nutritional impact on mood and mental health, food plays a multifaceted role in shaping emotional experiences. Also uncovering food's cultural and social significance, the comforting embrace of comfort foods, and the mindfulness practices that enhance the relationship with what is eaten. Join in celebrating the transformative power of food to bring joy, connection, and nourishment to every aspect of life.

1. The Pleasure of Eating: A Sensorial Experience

Food transcends basic sustenance; it's an immersive experience that captivates every sense. The smell of freshly baked bread, the vibrant hues of a salad, the enticing sizzle of food on a grill, and the burst of flavors on your taste buds collectively enrich the act of eating. These sensory encounters trigger neurotransmitters in the brain, like dopamine and serotonin, renowned for eliciting feelings of pleasure and joy. This is why care home like morriscare.co.uk put so much effort into their meal plans – understanding that their residents need something that will put a smile on their face as well as be suitably nutritious.

2. Nutritional Impact on Mood and Mental Health

Dietary choices wield significant influence over your emotional well-being and mental health. Nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins furnish essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants crucial for sustaining brain function and stabilizing mood. Conversely, diets abundant in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats have been correlated with heightened susceptibility to depression and anxiety.

3. Cultural and Social Significance of Food

Cuisine intricately weaves through culture, tradition, and communal gatherings. The act of sharing meals with loved ones nurtures a profound sense of belonging and fortifies social ties. Food often forms the centerpiece of cultural festivities and customs, emblematic of unity, plenty, and jubilation. Embracing diverse culinary traditions enables you to embrace the diversity of cultures and forge deeper connections with others.

4. Comfort Food: Nourishing the Soul

Comfort food holds a special place in your heart, offering solace during times of stress or sadness. Whether it's a warm bowl of soup on a cold day or a slice of homemade pie reminiscent of childhood, comfort foods evoke feelings of nostalgia and security. These familiar flavors and textures provide a sense of comfort and reassurance, soothing both the body and the soul.

5. Mindful Eating and Emotional Well-being

Engaging in mindful eating entails immersing oneself in the present moment, relishing each morsel without criticism. This conscientious approach not only enriches the dining experience but also nurtures emotional equilibrium. By fully immersing yourself in mealtime, you sharpen your awareness of hunger and satiety signals, ward off overindulgence, and cultivate a deeper gratitude for the nourishment before you.

In essence, food is more than just fuel for the body; it's a source of joy, connection, and nourishment for the mind, body, and soul. By embracing the sensory pleasures of eating, prioritizing nutrient-rich foods, celebrating cultural traditions, indulging in comfort foods in moderation, and practicing mindful eating, you can harness the transformative power of food to enhance your overall happiness and well-being.

The Perks of Pregnancy

For women on the family way, pregnancy is a cause for celebration. Sure, there are some things most moms-to-be would rather avoid such as “morning sickness” (which isn’t confined to just the morning) and raging hormones that are to be blamed for “pregnancy nose” and other hyperpigmentation and hair growth issues.

Thankfully, they’re temporary, and for all these less than pleasant effects of pregnancy, the top hospital in the Philippines Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed) points to the many perks of having kids besides the obvious (cute babies!).

According to Martin P. Manahan, MD of MakatiMed’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, some changes driven by childbirth are great for the mom’s body and mindset. “Since the health of the mom highly affects that of the child, most women also take this time as an opportunity to modify their lifestyle into a healthier one,” says Dr. Manahan. “The responsibility of motherhood and the desire to ensure the health of their baby motivates moms to adopt better choices and behaviors.”

What else are the pluses of pregnancy?

Easier periods

Many women find that they get less painful menstrual cramps after giving birth. “Dysmenorrhea goes away with pregnancy, regardless of the type of childbirth," says Dr. Manahan.

Improved intimacy

Mothers-to-be aren’t the only ones unleashing hormones at this stage. “That little bun in the oven is producing the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone,” reveals Dr. Manahan. “Together with its mom’s hormones, it may explain the ramped-up sex drive.” For moms, knowing that they’re already pregnant eases any tension, allowing them to fully enjoy intimacy with their significant other.

Lower risk of disease

“From breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancers, to multiple sclerosis, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, pregnancy is said to reduce your chances of developing these life- threatening diseases,” shares Dr. Manahan. “When you’re pregnant, you get your period less, which cuts
your exposure to estrogen and progesterone, hormones that trigger cell growth, boosting a woman’s risk of cancer. The immune system also adjusts itself to prevent it from ‘attacking’ the baby. This change lessens inflammation that may cause nerve damage.”

Better mood

After the hormone-powered journey that is pregnancy, most women find that their moods tend to stabilize. Dr. Manahan notes, “The hormone oxytocin plays a big role during mom and baby bonding. You’ll likely feel surges of love or just have positive, wonderful emotions whenever you hold or nurse your baby.”

Pregnancy doesn’t just result in the eventual birth of a baby. It means the birth of a mother too. “The process of becoming a mother is known as matrescence,” Dr. Manahan explains. “It’s at this stage that a woman begins to reflect on her life, specifically the choices she made and her long-held beliefs. Matrescence can signal a new chapter in your life, a chance to be and do better for yourself and your family.”

5 ways to establish mental wellness in the workplace

Press Release:

Ninety thousand hours. One-third of your life. That, according to industrial-organization psychologist and data scientist Andrew Naber, is the amount of time the average person will spend at work over a lifetime. With so much of our waking hours devoted to our job, isn’t it only fair to expect our workplace to be a safe, comfortable, and toxic-free environment, one that supports employees’ mental health and wellbeing?

Yes, says Jon Edward B. Jurilla, MD, chief of the Section of Psychiatry of the top hospital in the Philippines Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed). “Companies that prioritize the mental health of their workers can expect inspired productivity, sound decision making, and harmonious interactions among colleagues. When employees feel at ease in the workplace, they perform better, are motivated to get up in the morning, and are less likely to be depressed or suffer from burnout. It’s a win-win situation for all.”

In the Philippines, employers in the private sector are mandated to implement mental health workplace policies and programs through the comprehensive and ever-evolving guidelines by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). What else can companies do to champion mental health and wellness at work? Little things make a huge difference, and MakatiMed suggests implementing these five small but significant changes:

Make counseling accessible.

“Oftentimes, people want to express what’s troubling them but are wary about confiding in a colleague or don’t have the funds to see a specialist,” shares Dr. Jurilla. “Get a life coach or organizational psychologist on board so staffers know there’s a professional who can help them deal with their mental health concerns objectively and free from judgment.”

Promote flexible work schedules.

If possible, let them continue a work-from-home setup with an option to work at the office. “Such arrangements have been known to lower stress and make employees more productive,” suggests Dr. Jurilla. “You take away the tiring commute, giving them the freedom to work wherever best suits them. This allows for work-life balance. Injecting ‘me’ time in between banging out reports or meeting a client on Zoom can refresh the mind and spirit.”

Create quiet spaces.

“Convert an extra room in the office into a meditation or quiet corner. Hire a yoga or tai-chi instructor to hold one-hour classes for the staff (a video session works too!). The silence and slow, gentle movements will surely calm frayed nerves and clear an anxious mind,” Dr. Jurilla points out.

Stay away after office hours.

If you get the urge to text, call, or email an employee after she or he has gone home for the day, the weekend, or on leave—stop yourself, stresses Dr. Jurilla. “These people already gave most of their hours and efforts to their jobs. Respect their personal time and let them enjoy their time away from work.”

Be open.

How do you know if your employees are truly happy with their jobs? Ask them “Perhaps someone is saddled with too much work, or another feels underutilized,” says Dr. Jurilla. “By consulting your team, addressing their concerns, and involving them in the decision-making process, you’ll make them feel relevant. Heard. Like they matter. And that’s the first step to promoting mental wellness at work.”

REP goes on a love rollercoaster with I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change

Directed by Menchu Lauchengo-Yulo, REP's I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change takes a modern
twist on the classic exploration of love and romance. With book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro,
and music by Jimmy Roberts, this comedy musical has a cast of 40 playing characters.

How many left swipes before finding The One? Is a year-long talking stage acceptable? How to get over being catfished? With love and romance as complicated as they’ve ever been, Repertory Philippines (REP) gives us a wild ride through the phases of modern relationships as it showcases the musical comedy I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change from June 14 to July 6 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in RCBC Plaza.

With book and lyrics by award-winning Joe DiPietro, music by renowned composer Jimmy Brooks, and directed by the First Lady of Philippine Musical Theater Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, REP’s latest production presents a series of hilarious yet achingly familiar vignettes on connection and intimacy, commitment and loneliness. Premiering at the Westside Theatre in 1996, this 2024 staging is set in a bustling metropolis where swiping left or right is the norm—touching on things like chasing that invisible string in this era of situationships and ghosting and reigniting that spark despite all the distractions.

REP’s take on the second longest-running off-Broadway musical features a fantastic and accomplished cast of four playing 40 characters. And all are making their theater comeback with this production. Gian Magdangal, known for his versatile skills as a singer and actor, takes the stage after his standout performance in the 2022 REP production of Carousel, which earned him his second PHILSTAGE Gawad Buhay award as Male Lead Performance in a Musical & L.E.A.F. Awards Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Musical. A long-time REPper, Gabby Padilla joins the quartet after garnering recent acclaim for her film roles in Billie and Emma where she got a FAMAS nod and Gitling which made her win Best Actress award at the 2nd Paragon Film Lokal Choice Awards and 4th Pinoy Rebyu Awards.

Gian Magdangal, Gabby Padilla, Marvin Ong, and Krystal Kane explore the highs and lows of love-
from awkward first dates to challenges of maintaining a long-term relationship--in REP's I Love You You're Perfect, Now Change

Krystal Kane is returning to the spotlight after a four-year hiatus. Bitten by the theater bug since she’s 10, Kane is known for her roles in The Sound of Music as Brigitta, In the Heights as Nina, Spring Awakening as Wendla and Tabing Ilog: The Musical as Jerry. Another theater comeback, PHILSTAGE Gawad Buhay Awardee singer-actor-songwriter Marvin Ong, brings his remarkable talents to the stage, having previously earned accolades for his role as Toby in REP’s Sweeney Todd and achieving gold record status for his debut album. The production will be supported by swings, Barbara Jance, whom we last saw at REP’s 2023 - 2024 run of Snow White and the Prince and Davy Narciso, known for the productions under his belt with Ateneo’s Blue Repertory, he may have stepped back from theater since graduating in 2022 but now he tries to juggle it together with pushing a career in Psychology.

An exceptional team of creatives is also bringing this production to life. Assistant Director Cara Barredo, Musical Director Ejay Yatco, Set and Costume Designer Joey Mendoza, Associate Costume Designer Hershee Tantiado, Associate Set Designer Lawyn Cruz, Projector Graphics and Video Designer GA Fallarme, Lighting Designer Meliton Roxas, Choreographer Stephen Viñas, and Sounds Designer Aji Manalo are all on board to join the quest for modern love.

“With I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, we want to give audiences something they can relate to whether they’re a young romantic hit by dating app fatigue or an older couple going through the trials of marriage,” Lauchengco-Yulo explains. “Because regardless of the age or stage in love, we want this show to emphasize that despite all the problems and miscommunications, love endures—with lots of laughs and some wit on the side.”
